Staffers at PACIFICA RADIO noncommercial Variety KPFA/BERKELEY-SAN FRANCISCO picketed the company THURSDAY to protest layoffs at the station.
PACIFICA is planning seven layoffs of full-time paid employees as a response to declining donations resulting in a budget shortfall, and about 100 people picketed in front of KPFA to register their disapproval. COMMUNICATIONS WORKERS OF AMERICA Local 9415, which represents the workers, contends that the company has been taking too much of the listener donation budget to fund its corporate bureaucracy and has proposed alternatives to layoffs in a "sustainable budget" that PACIFICA has rejected.
Another rally is planned in front of KPFA on NOVEMBER 11th to protest the possible cancellation of three shows -- "HARD KNOCK," "FLASHPOINT" and "FULL CIRCLE."
