Condolences to family and friends of longtime DULUTH radio personality and station owner LEW LATTO, who died WEDNESDAY morning in FISH LAKE, WI at 71. The DULUTH NEWS TRIBUNE reports that LATTO, who had been hosting mornings at MIDWEST COMMUNICATIONS Talk WDSM-A/DULUTH, passed away as he was preparing to come in to work early WEDNESDAY.
LATTO started his career while in high school at WKLK-A/CLOQUET, MN, and worked for several stations in the market, including WEBC-A, WAKX-A, and WDSM-A, over the years. He owned WAKX and KXTP-A/DULUTH from 1964 through their sale in 1994, but remained owner of IRON RANGE BROADCASTING, licensee of AC WEVE and Talk KRBT-A/EVELETH, MN, and LATTO NORTHLAND BROADCASTING, licensee of Country KGPZ/GRAND RAPIDS, MN. As a young DJ, he promoted and emceed one of the last concerts on the ill-fated Winter Dance Party tour of early 1959 featuring BUDDY HOLLY.
Tribute shows are being aired TODAY and TOMORROW on WDSM and sister KDAL.
