CASH MONEY/UNIVERSAL REPUBLIC rapper LIL WAYNE's latest album, "Tha Carter IV" exceeded most industry analyst sales projections by sold 964,000 copies from AUG 29th through SUNDAY, its first week out. The NY TIMES reports that figure is anywhere from 50,000-100,000 more than predicted --and the most sales for any hip-hop album since LIL WAYNE’s "Tha Carter III," which moved 1,006,000 in its first week in 2007.
The album also opens up a debate as to whether it's the most successful record sales story of the year. While LADY GAGA's "Born This Way" moved 1,108,000 out of the box in MAY, that number was goosed by an AMAZON promotion that offered her album for just 99 cents -- a discount that generated more than 400,000 sales. No such discount was available for LIL WAYNE’s new album
