PETER ROEBUCK, the former British cricket player who became well-known in AUSTRALIA as a writer and radio commentator on the sport, died SATURDAY of an apparent suicide in a jump from a sixth-floor hotel window in CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA. He was 55. ROEBUCK's death came as police were reportedly questioning him in relation to an alleged sexual assault, although police have not confirmed that report.
ROEBUCK played for SOMERSET from 1974 through 1991, serving as captain in 1986-88, and later played Minor Counties cricket for DEVON through 2002. Moving to AUSTRALIA and SOUTH AFRICA, he wrote for the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD and MELBOURNE AGE and did commentary for ABC RADIO's cricket coverage.
