1. What was your first job in radio and early influences?
It was at an AM daylight only Christian outfit in the basement of a house. I played sermons on cassette, music from reels and 45's. Early influence would have been some random mid 80's night jock on Q102 in Cincinnati. That guy sounds like he's having fun.
2. Was there a defining moment which led to your radio career when you realized this is what I want to do for a living?
Haha that random mid 80's night jock on q102 in Cincinnati. That guy sounds like he's having fun.
3. What were the origins of The Frank Show? How did you and the other players all meet and form the show?
I've played QB here in Tucson for 20 years with the show evolving. I noticed local comics whispering about Portland comic Kristine Levine moving to Tucson, I knew almost right away she'd play co-host. So I did nothing to reach out, knowing eventually she'd end up in my studio, and I was right. The shows origin however starts with my friendship with John Michael. We were mid 90's Memphis roommates, and when the opportunity to do a show presented itself, John offered.
4. How long have you been doing mornings for KLPX and give us some of the ratings highlights during your time there?
This Summer 2020 marks 10 years as host of mornings for KLPX, and a decade on sister station KFMA prior. Ratings history has us #1 with men 25-54 and top three persons. Quite literally the only reason I'm in the same chair for 20 years. If I don't have these number's you're hitting up Famous Amos for ten questions!
5. Who are some of the other players on The Frank Show?
Please google Kristine Levine. Kristine came on board in July 2017. She's a superstar and a mega talent and the sort of second mic guys like me can only dream of having. She's a comedienne, actress and author and she absolutely shatters the mold. You can check her out in a grip of episodes of Portlandia, my personal favorite would be Family Emergency. Beef Vegan was picked up to produce from our sister KFMA, and now goes by Brad.
6. Describe a typical morning show for you guys. a) What is the process and what are some of the key benchmarks of your show?
Kristine, Brad and myself have a three person Google Hangouts party going on our phones at all times. Links and chats get thrown down all day and Brad has a fresh show sheet ready to go by five am. That skeleton schedule props us up as planned but segments get last second ditched for live developing content thru the course of the snow. We always plenty of leftovers when the show ends.
7. Tell us some of the best and most memorable moments to date on The Frank Show?
20 years is a lot of radio. I feel like after 20 years it's more of a big picture look. What are my listeners getting by sticking with me for 20 years? First off I'm very funny, and with the very smart and funny Kristine Levine, it's just good smart, funny radio. Secondly, I'm a cut thru everyone's bs type. I'm lucky enough to be able to get away with pointing and calling out bs on nearly every level. When SO many folk never have that chance, having me do that for them has created this host listener bond that I wish I was better at articulating.
8. You are VERY active with Social Media like Facebook and Twitter. How has that benefitted your morning show?
Social media activity has slowed down a bit. Facebook groups get massaged to filter out fake news zombies. I feel like social media's role in dividing America has led to a rethink in who we interact with on the socials. Just like in real life, I wouldn't want to hang out with certain folk, and I’m also not interested in reading your all caps rant about how your doctor won't let you wear a mask cuz of anxiety. Ok byeeee!!!
9. Speaking of Social Media, I know that you personally are VERY opinionated about your political beliefs on your Facebook page. Are you ever concerned that one of your listener’s might disagree and stop listening to The Frank Show?
Lol no. Honestly, I'm estranged from my own parents on account I voted for a black man. So I’m not at all worried that I might ruffle feathers. There's nobody with a national platform that counter programs to hate radio so if I trigger a hate monger I'm doing the lords work.
10. Finally, how has the Covid-19 pandemic changed the way you to your morning show?
Working from home has changed the way all of us do our jobs hasn't it? I've alerted company managers, that good luck getting me back in the studio. At the beginning of February I wouldn't have been able to tell you the brand of mic I was speaking into. I'm an old radio dog and we have engineers for that stuff. Now I'm a gear head that refuses to stop learning and being AMAZED at the technology. I'll bore you to tears gushing about my sm7b, cl-2 cloudlifter, dbx 286s audio chain into my rodecaster pro mixer with proprietary breakout cable for return studio audio thru the allaccess 2usb comrex using crosslock VoIP! Unless I say something, even my OM thinks I'm in the studio. I have a proper home studio sound treatment scheduled the week after the 4th of July!
