The recent social media uproar over how Hollywood assistants are underpaid and treated like dirt illuminates a problem that, while not isolated to show business, is widespread (including in radio), that young aspirants are often made to do grunt work for low pay and long hours and are expected to be grateful, because there are many people waiting to take their slots. It's exploitation, cloaked in "that's how it was when I started out, so it's your turn." But at what point does that just perpetuate bad policy and behavior? And when does "there are hundreds of people lined up to take your job if you don't want it" mean that you don't have to pay someone a decent, living wage? (Los Angeles Times)
