Lissen To Haough Funny They Tawk

In HBO's new "Mare of Easttown," Kate Winslet (and everyone else in the show) takes a stab at the Philadelphia accent (a/k/a a Delco accent, though the real Easttown is in Chester County and you don't have to be from Delaware County to SOUND like you're from Delco). This article by Philly-area Ringer writer Michael Baumann includes a fairly in-depth examination of the accent, which is unique (only Baltimore is close) and goofy and nobody outside the area gets right, and I say that as someone who has tried to get rid of all traces of the accent for years and still lapses into it when I'm tired or talking to friends from back east or I'm actually in a Wawa in King of Prussia ordering a hoagie. Anyway, it's a chance for you to talk accents: What defines the accent in your area, and what it says about you (and, yes, all I have to do is say a word with an "O" in it funny and everyone assumes I'll break into "Fly Eagles Fly" at the drop of a hat, which might be true, come to think of it).
