Herbie Hancock
Aug 9, 2010

Herbie Hancock is regarded not only as one of the greatest living jazz musicians, but also as one of the most influential jazz musicians of the past several decades. And like his mentor, Miles Davis, Hancock has always brought in diverse elements into his music. With each new project, Hancock takes a step in a new direction.
That is certainly the case with "The Imagine Project." This is an unprecedented international music and film project featuring collaborations between Hancock and dozens of singers and musicians from every corner of the planet. It utilizes the "universal language of music to express its central themes of peace and global responsibility," as Hancock said of the vision behind it.
"The Imagine Project" contributors include Dave Matthews, Anoushka Shankar, Jeff Beck, The Chieftains, John Legend, India.Arie, Seal, Pink, Juanes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Chaka Khan, K'Naan, Wayne Shorter, James Morrison, Lisa Hannigan and many more. Not only was the effort recorded for CD, but it was also filmed for an in-depth DVD that features performances, opinions and behind-the-scenes footage.
The entire project is an important recording with several tracks that fit Triple A radio: John Lennon's "Imagine," which features Arie, Beck and Oumou Sangare; Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up," featuring Pink and Legend; Mathew Moore's "Space Captain," feature Tedeschi and Trucks; Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A' Changin," featuring The Chieftains, Toumani Diabete and Hannigan; and Lennon & McCartney's "Tomorrow Never Knows," feature Matthews.
On January 18th, 2009, Hancock performed at the We Are One concert, marking the start of inaugural celebrations for President Barack Obama. He also performed "Rhapsody in Blue" at the 2009 Classical BRIT Awards with classical pianist Lang Lang. Hancock has been named as the Los Angeles Philharmonic's creative chair for jazz for 2010-12. On June 5, 2010, Hancock received an Alumni Award from his alma mater, Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA.
