Joy Williams

After the breakup of The Civil Wars in 2014, we all wondered what would happen. We have now found out with the release of Joy Williams solo effort, Venus (it is worth noting Williams has released four solo albums and four EPs since 2001). The new album was produced by Matt Morris, with who she also collaborated with on some of the songs.
Venus is a soul-searching effort that leaves little unexplored in terms of William's last few years. In addition to the two singles, "Woman (Oh Mama)" and "Before I Sleep," several other tracks stand out including "Sweet Love Of Mine," "Until The Levee," "What A Good Woman Does" and "Welcome Home."
Of the time leading up to this new effort Williams said, ""I heard a quote once, I think originally by Eleanor Roosevelt, that said, 'A woman is like a bag of tea... you never know how strong she is until she's put in hot water.' When I was writing 'Until the Levee,' I felt like I was swimming in that hot water. Everyone was asking about the abrupt end of The Civil Wars, I was trying to sort out a new rhythm as a new mother, fighting for my marriage which was going through a major overhaul, and reeling over my Dad's terminal cancer diagnosis. I felt like I was up to my eyeballs in it all. There was a battle within myself: I could either let it all drown me, or I could learn to swim."
Venus has been receiving great press and was an NPR First Listen. She has performed on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" and KCRW's "Morning Become Eclectic." Williams also did an in-depth interview with WFUV's Rita Houston recently.
Williams did a series of showcase dates at the end Of May. Look for her more dates to be announced soon.
