So I am watching all this talk of storms rollin' through Nashville today. (Technically they are rolling through Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana and other parts of Tennessee as well.)
Everyone seems to be watching and waiting and leaving work early for what could be an all-or-nothing event. I heard schools closed - like it was a snow day or something. That seems a bit extreme. Better to be safe than sorry, I guess, right? [Insert skeptical face here.] [And rolling eyes here.] Nashville always seems to overreact.
If we were in Orlando, I clearly would be asking myself: WWZ883D? You know, what would Z88.3 do? Because they would be locked into the Emergency Alert System and loaded with information, and I'd be set. Take it away, Deano!
Or say that I'm in Dallas. Well, I would just set my Twitter mobile notifications for @MPrendergastTX to "On" and let him take care of the storm chasing for me.
But alas, I'm stuck in Nashville. Best I can hope for is a round of ghost stories by flashlight with Chris Hauser when the power goes out. Or even if the power doesn't go out. Because, let's be honest, who doesn't love hearing Hauser tell stories.
Obviously, so I'm not taking this very seriously. And there will be egg on my face if something horrible does happen tonight.
But do you ever find yourself surrounded by Chicken Littles? Where the tiniest red blob on the radar sends him or her into frantic dive under the desk? And maybe you just want to scream, "Serenity now!" And I'm not even just referring to weather incidents. What about during a pledge drive and the calls are coming in slowly? Or the rumbles of a sale to a corporate conglomerate reach your ears? What is the best response you can have in that moment?
Hear the words: "Peace. Be still." Let the winds toss you where they may and show the Chicken Littles how to ride out a storm.
P.S. While I believe in the words "peace, be still," I would never defiantly stand against a tornado. I would be cowering in my basement praying.
P.P.S. Any time that @JimCantore writes in ALL CAPS on Twitter, no matter where I am in the country, even if I'm not near him, I want to dive under my couch for shelter.
