1) What's happened in the world of the Shanes since "Pages" released?
We have been on the road for the most part. We have played more than 300 shows on the heels of the "Pages" release. Also, Shane B got married, which was a pretty big deal. We have also taken part time positions at out church as worship pastors/professors for a school of worship.
We lead at our church The Oaks Fellowship once a month and we teach Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5 when we are home. We have 32 students that are in the worship tract at the Oaks School of Leadership (or OSL) that we have the privilege of working with specifically in the areas of songwriting and discipleship.
2) Tell us what we can hear on the new album "Everything Is Different": sounds, words, message.
The new record is a bit different in its production. We basically set up some mics and played straight through the songs. Traditionally we will track drums first and then guitar, bass, vox, etc. We wanted to capture more of what we do in our live shows. Because of the process I believe the record has an organic feel that our previous projects did not have. It's all subjective but we thoroughly enjoyed the process.
As far as the message is concerned, we always have been huge advocates of scripture in songs, and this record follows suit. We want people to be moved toward the person of Christ, and we believe wholeheartedly that the Word of God is powerful and a catalyst in that process.
3) Do you have a favorite song on the new album?
My favorite song on the record is "Worthy of Affection." Something about that passage in Hebrews is just working on me. That the person of Jesus is the radiance of the Glory of God and that he holds all things together by the word of his power. That's some strong words. I don't even really understand that but it's rockin' my world.
4) What's the story behind recording the current single "My Hope Is Built"? What's the meaning of that song to you?
Well this song in particular was actually recorded for a record Shane and I just produced and wrote for our church. Now that we have been leading corporately on a consistent basis, we have been inspired to write with a slightly different approach. I (Shane Everett) wanted to redo this old hymn with a rock feel for Sunday morning worship. We then went into the studio and cranked this song out, and we were so pleased with it that we put it on our record as well. We also made it the first single. Crazy how things work out. As far as meaning is concerned, the message is so clear in this old hymn like so many others and the words are so profound. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness!!!! Amen.
5) Which do you enjoy more: the process (writing, recording) or the performance?
We love the recording process and feel like that is somewhat of our hobby. The other parts of what we do sometime feel like work, but when we get in the studio it's like two kids in a candy store.
6) What does the start of 2010 look like for you guys?
In January we are playing quite a few conferences and events. In February we are heading out on the road with Kari Jobe. She will be a part of our Spring tour. The dates are TBA, but nevertheless we are really excited. We have known Kari for years and love how she leads and encourages the body of Christ to worship.
7) As you were in the studio working on this new album, did you have any "stop, roll that back" moments when you thought, "Now we have something - and this is good!"?
We did! We had several of those moments on the record. On the song "My Portion," I can remember tracking with our drummer Joey Parish and guitar player Jason Hoard at the same time. After a few tracks we finally hit "the one." We played it back and heard what we thought was something special!
8) Do have any interesting or funny stories from your visits to radio stations?
Our favorite radio station visit was most definitely to the Rivers' ranch north of Dallas. It started with camels and ended with a greasy barbeque burger in the middle of nowhere!
9) Do you make New Year's Resolutions? Do you have any for 2010?
Eat less! Love God more!
10) Do you have time to listen to much music? What other artists are you listening to right now?
We don't have a bunch of time, but I like to listen to music when I am driving. Bethany Dillon's new record is great and Phil Wickham.
