BarlowGirl (2004)1) Briefly introduce the band members (your sisters) using some personality characteristics.
Alyssa: Leader, like the leader in a pack of wolves
Lauren: Sunshine in the gray
Rebecca: Hebrew scrolls of the group (the "brains" of the band)
2) Tell us real quick about the story behind the current single "Beautiful Ending."
"Beautiful Ending" was birthed out of the fear that we would be so caught up in doing the work of God that we lost sight of him. At the end of the day, at the end of our lives, all that matters is our relationship with God. In the world's eyes, money and sales numbers are the forms of success; however being in his arms is what is most important.
3) What message do you hope to convey through the new album "Love & War"?
We hope that "Love & War" reaches a broad audience and hits a chord with people. We want to encourage the church to get out of their comfort zone and reach out to the broken and needy.
4) What might surprise us, musically or lyrically, on the new album? What are we hearing from BarlowGirl on this record?
This album we spent more time working with the songs than any other album. We would try songs in different time signatures, experiment with different rhythms. This was a new season for us and we have grown as musicians so we really wanted to break new ground with "Love & War."
5) Is there any song in the BarlowGirl repertoire that you enjoying performing more than another? Is there a favorite song to perform live?
Right now our favorite to play live is "Stay with Me" from our new album. While it is still new, it gets a great crowd response. Another one we love performing live is "Million Voices."
6) After all the albums, radio singles, tours, etc., how do you keep a sense of urgency about this life, career known as BarlowGirl? How do you keep it fresh for your own sanity?
We have been working at balance and have been much better about it than when we first started. We definitely tour less and make it a priority to be home more. We even try to ensure our tour routing allows us to be home for church on Wednesday nights. While we are on the road, we try to take the time to get out for a walk to Starbucks or to ride a bike.
7) Any funny, inspiring or interesting stories that you can tell us from your visits to radio stations in past or present days?
Alyssa: Our first year out on the road we were doing an interview in a side room of one particular radio station. After we finished the interview, the interviewer pulled out a ring and proposed to me! At first I laughed thinking he was kidding. But then he told me he was serious. Our dad, who is also our manager, stepped in at that point. But needless to say, it was very awkward and uncomfortable!
8) What's ahead on the tour schedule?
At the end of September we are launching a tour with Superchick and VOTA! We look forward to going out on the road with our friends in Superchick who have been supporting us from the beginning!
9) Do you guys have time to listen to much music? What other artists are you listening to right now?
Lauren: Lately I have been listening to an independent musician from Nashville named Matthew Mayfield, but also listening to a lot of Coldplay and Switchfoot.
Alyssa: I have been listening to a ton of worship music, mainly Jesus Culture, Hillsong and Phil Wickham.
Rebecca: The two albums I have been listening to the most lately are "You're Love Never Fails" from Jesus Culture and a CD called "Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms," which is an entire instrumental album.
10) Say we were to open a BarlowGirl strip mall. What city would it be in? And what kind of store would each of you open?
Rebecca: I would open a 1960s mechanic shop with a coffee shop, library, pottery shop, cosmetic parlor/spa and grocery store, with a playground. It would be a one-stop shop for moms to get all of their errands done and have a place for their kids, too. I would open this in Chicago or San Diego.
Lauren: I would open a humane pet shop with no cages or anything to keep the animals under control in Chicago!
Alyssa: I would open a photo shop with cameras, lenses, etc., and a place to get good digital photos developed in Chicago.
