The holiday season is a perfect time for air personalities to offer their services to potential new revenue sources.
Let Me Explain ...
Volunteer to help with the stations FCC's Quarterly Issues/Programs List If you're looking for new ways to earn extra money. You'll have access to public service organization projects. Be a team player and volunteer to sift through all the e-mail/snail mail from non-profit organizations wishing to publicize events and programs. You'll see the names of decision makers who might need assistance emceeing something. This could begin a relationship that could lead to becoming an expense item when budgets are put together for events.
How It Works ...
Nonprofit does not mean zero dollars to operate. In the philanthropic world there are budgets with salaried managers, workers and advisors. Organically you could become the go-to for charitable situations. You'll no longer have to worry about how many paid personal appearances/remotes come your way from your stations sales department.
What I learned ...
For example, during my air talent days in Chicago, I stumbled into celebrity auctioneering and earned a tidy sum by applying my talents to numerous local charity events. The experience taught me to use my on-air status in the private sector as another revenue stream. It's easier to do so if you believe in the goals of an organization.
It's Okay ...
It's called "the right of free will." If a non-profit wants to pay you for services, you can say no and donate your time. But never feel as if you are accepting monies that would otherwise go to helping others. Budgets and operating expenses are same for any business --commercial or nonprofit.
Perceived Importance ...
Regardless of position, full or part-time, being heard over the airwaves has a magical effect on listeners; many of whom are in charge or have access to people in charge. Doing public appearances gives some air talent a glimpse, but not the full magnitude of how they are perceived. This holds true for all audio and related media --online, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, podcasts, etc.
Helping ...
You can help others and yourself. It won't happen overnight --you'll have to put in time volunteering your services until such time you're able to become part of an annual budget. It's one of those feel factor things, hopefully you'll know when it's time to make a pitch. In case you were wondering, it takes a couple of years to build credibility with the listening audience before becoming a trusted member of the community. Once things start to roll, it's amazing how interconnected people are within the charitable world of non-profits. The extra income will start to add up --all because you learned that your on-air skills are valuable assets to the outside world.
