Writing a weekly column is a challenge to the brain's creative cells. My mind starts to draw blanks just before the holidays. It's hard to believe we're in full holiday season mode. At times like these, I remember that New York based situation comedy writers used to visit New York's Museum of Television & Radio, whenever they needed to unlock brain freeze.
Let's All Breathe …
I think with the kind of year, or I should say the last two years we've had, this holiday season couldn’t come fast enough. Many of us in radio can forget sometimes that we're a part of the audience. The best way to stay in touch with the real world is to use the holidays to help recharge our inner core. Most importantly, make sure you stay in step with the average listener.A Holiday Lesson ...
One of the best lessons I ever learned happened during the holidays years ago, when I was working in Northern California's Bay area. I was out Christmas shopping and decided to go car shopping, too. He was in there alone, with the door open. His Radio Was On ...
Every time I was within an ear shot of that office, I noticed his radio was sometimes up real loud and sometimes it wasn't. I knew it was his radio because he was listening to one my rival stations in the market--I heard some imaging when I was eavesdropping.I Was Curious ...
I hung out near that office so long that they must’ve thought I was a spy for another dealership. But it was my curiosity they kept me close to that room. What I figured out was that whenever a song came on that the general manager liked, he turned the volume up and if it was something he didn’t like as much, he turned it down. What's Actually Important …
That taught me a simple programming lesson. Always make the music the centerpiece and play as many songs as possible back-to-back to make listeners turn up the volume.Relax & Recharge ...
Use the Holidays to help recharge your inner core. Take time to slow down and look around to see if you're overlooking anything, like yourself. Happy Holidays! -
