Back When Radio Was Fun
Before the Dean Wormers of the world took hold, myself, like a lot of people I know, went into radio because it was fun. Because whatever we were doing was going to be more fun than whatever our friends with real jobs were doing.
I look at stations that are historically large and one commonality is...they're having fun. KSFM in Sacramento was on a ten year roll of #1's and Jenny the receptionist? Who knows. She might moon you when you came in. They drank together, they partied together, they dorked around in the halls together, and few stations have ever pulled numbers like that.
Rick Thomas used to hate dealing with labels so when he was at Z-90, to take the hate off himself, we created "Boomer The Bass Pig" (we stole the name off a rap CD some label in Miami sent us; Boomer was the engineer) and created a fake Music Director. I even dummied up a fake resume of great stations like Power 106 and WNCI and Hot 103, we went to National City, took a photo of a random guy, and sent it off to the trades. Now the reps were pissed at Boomer, not Rick for not returning calls.
Hot 99.5 in DC? FUN. And #1. Tommy Chuck got some songs emailed to him from some gypsy artist in eastern Europe. He replied:
You can send all of BogDan Hair's music to our Music Director Elizabethany. Please contact her often and keep her updated on this music. As a child of a gypsy family herself, she is already a HUGE fan! When she heard this wonderful music coming from the speakers she couldn't stop dancing!
Her email address is EB@Hot995.com.
The more you email her, the better your chances of gaining airplay on popular American radio. Please email her weekly and provide updates.
The Second Chance Summer
A station-that-must-remain-nameless has the op to score scads(tm) of tickets to lots of shows like Def Leppard, Chicago, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Pat Benatar and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The concept to tie them all together? The Second Chance Summer. Call in and tell how you had tickets to Motley Crue in 1987 but your dad grounded you for mowing over a rock and breaking his Toro.
That's the Summer focus at one of the stations. It's taking basic promotional ops that drop in their laps, like concerts and celebrity visits, and tweaking them with limo and shopping and other accoutrement so it's a money-can't-buy prize for a winner.
One of the stations has a clothing store that wants something for back to school.
Ryan was a young woman who was the first real Street Teamer at Wild in Tampa. She was the Fashion Coordinator for the station. She took the GM's credit card and bought clothes so the airstaff did not look like idiots when they were out in public. (She later got wasted and lost bowel control in a limo at a concert. She never returned.)
What if you did a version of Hot 89.9's Party Girl and had a very hip intern or street teamer be your critic. Updated webinars on what is hitting fashion-wise and what is now passe'. Could be done for the summer. Most definitely for BTS.
