NAME:Darci DawnTITLE:MD/AfternoonsSTATIONS:KLLYMARKET:Bakersfield, CA - Market #82 (The fall book will be #81)COMPANY:Buckley BroadcastingBORN:November 26th in LA and moved immediately to New YorkRAISED:The first nine years I bounced from the Right Coast to the Left Coast. We settled in San Diego for 14 years. Then I ran off with my first love to Huntington Beach to go to Cal State University of Long Beach.
Please outline your radio career so far:
(Buckley Broadcasting) - Mornings on KLLY/Bakersfield in July of 2002. - KDND/Sacramento, CA (Entercom) - Mornings, December of 2003. Then back to KLLY for Afternoons/MD in Sept of 2006.
1) What was your first job in radio?
My first job in radio was the KLLY morning show. What led me to radio was EJ Tyler (My PD) who found me working in a bar in LA trying to make it as an actor in the Improv (Second City), a voice-over actor, and all the money making stuff in-between. He said, "How about a job?" and I said, "Hell yeah!" That's a bit simplistic but it kinda goes like that.
2) What were your early influences?
Some of my early influences in radio were when I was going to college I listened to Jed the Fish, Mark and Brian, and Dusty Street.
3) What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
If I weren't in radio, I would have my sites set on "Saturday Night Live," "Mad TV" and doing voices for animation (which is still a passion).
4) How do you market your radio station?
The best way is on a personal grass roots level. Making interpersonal connections with listeners.
5) What would be your ideal dream job?
My radio dream job would be to do Progressive Talk show with the perfect blend of topical, political, emotional and comedy!
6) What are your favorite artists or songs of this year?
My favorite songs of the year are Mat Kearney "Nothing Left to Lose," and Mika "Grace Kelly."
7) How do you feel terrestrial radio competes with the satellite radio and Internet these days?
Satellite radio has guaranteed people no commercials. That's why you pay for it, and now it is turning into what terrestrial radio is except with all the fun of cussing and using the words I wish I could!!
8) Just about every market has a station flipping to "Jack," "Bob," "Max," or "Movin' Rhythmic Hot AC. What are your thoughts on these new formats? Will they go the distance?
I think the I-Pod formats are ok but I still believe people want consistency so they will fall back on the stations that give them that. The I-Pod format would be great if it was expanded to B-sides or album sides or even more Eclectic. We all know the format is still just as limited as any.
9) What was the biggest gaffe you've made on air? (dead air ... forget a mic was still on ... etc.)
The "F-up" on air wasn't the "F-bomb" it was when I was interviewing Will Smith, and we got so comfortable (or it least I was) and I dropped the "S-bomb" ...Thank God for the delay.
10) Do you have any good stalker stories? Misty requests? "Fatal Attractions?"
As far as stalker stores goes there was a foot fetish guy who would call and offer to wash my feet and paint my toenails. Then he started to send me pictures of my feet at remotes. He would know which brand of shoes I was wearing. It was kinda creepy. I tried to discourage him but he kept on. He stayed fairly tame just sending e-mails and pics. That ended when I left the market. At least I know I have nice feet.
