BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
DEMO:
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and to stay motivated?
It's not easy, but I keep my routine as if I was still working. Check e-mails, show prep, work on bits and podcast subject matter, follow-up with potential employers on the progress of my application and check All Access for my next job opportunity ... like every day, 10 times a day.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Like I said, I treat it as if were a regular work day. Networking and making phone calls. Plus, I am back in my hometown, so I am taking advantage of the time I get to spend with my family before I move on to my next opportunity (hopefully my last).
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I believe this has been said in the past and most probably agree: the lack of communication when applying to jobs, not even a "thank you for your interest" e-mail. We are in the communication business and no one is communicating. I understand we are wearing more hats, but if we take the time to apply, take the time to reply.
4) Do you plan on sticking with radio?
That's the plan, but I am seeking other opportunities and see what happens. My second passion is food, so working in that industry would be pretty cool, too.
5) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
I would have to say three months has been the longest I've been on the beach, and I am already bored at four weeks! Come on, somebody!
6) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
I believe being persistent and professional about it, and these days it seems like it's not how much you know but who you know. Network as much as you can with those in the seat to make decisions via social media, LinkedIn and e-mail. Stay in tune with what's going on in the industry.
7) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
There's only one! No I didn't get paid for this endorsement: AllAccess.com
8) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
Sent food and singing telegram!
9) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Well that's a hard one, but I would have to say ... morning show host on an AC, Classic Hits or Country station with APD/MD stripes or PD/afternoon drive on the same formats, AC, Classic Hits or Country station.
10) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
I guess it depends on the market size ... it seems like the smaller markets are paying less and then on the other hand, there has also been some pleasant surprises in those same smaller markets. Same holds true for medium to major markets. You just have to be sure that you weigh out your options and choose what is best for you.
