Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
My broadcast career started just over 30 years ago as a student at Midwestern Broadcasting School in Chicago. One of my teachers was Jim Channell, who as 'Captain Whammo,' ruled the nighttime airwaves in the Windy City. My first real gig was at WJPF-AM in Herrin, IL as the overnight guy. From there, I've had gigs in Florida, Alaska and here in Virginia. I even tried to buy a station, but things didn't quite pan out. Now I'm doing forecasts for the Radio Forecast Network and selling real estate.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
My faith in Jesus Christ and the love of my wife keep me centered.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Selling real estate and thinking about entering into Internet radio.
3) Do you plan on sticking with the radio industry?
Maybe. The money is better in real estate, but I still want to have some hand in it.
4) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access!
5) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
Called a station from a pay phone and played my aircheck over the phone.
6) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Not sure. I would like to be able to share things I've learned through the years with younger talent. I'm a pretty good programmer, too.
7) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, e-mails, rejection letters, etc.)
I've sent out over 30 resumes and airchecks. I've gotten two e-mails and one phone call.
8) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
Small markets still pay like small markets.
9) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I pride myself on trying to keep up with technology and computers, being able to do other things with automation, scheduling, etc.
10) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Grow a thick skin, stay focused and positive, and don't give up.
Bonus Questions
My favorite new diversion is...
Screenwriting. It's a wonderful thing to watch a story grow on paper. Kinda like writing a novel, but trying to keep the action moving.
