1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
We have to tell you it's tough but since we have been looking for work we got a call from Cameron Gray at WJFK in DC. He was looking for replacements for Ron and Fez. The company decided to syndicate Jay Severin instead of something local. We were also contacted by Robert Cross at K-Rock in NY. He was looking to fill the afternoon slot and he was interested in us. We didn't get the gig but it was nice that the program director in the #1 Rated market and Rock station at the time liked us and was interested.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Birdsey- I have a wife and kids so providing for them and keeping a positive outlook. Opportunities are going to happen soon. A lot of changes are coming.
Bdub- staying active with current events and always doing radio shows on the phone with Birdsey. I want to make our return to radio as seamless as possible
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Seeing the direction radio has taken since we last worked is something. No more personalities or giant show events. That's what we were all about. Whether hosting a theme party or a bus trip to the Bada Bing for the season finale of the Sopranos. Our show was a real party and it showed with our ratings success.
4) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
This stretch, over a year. Sucks big time. CHOMPING at the bit to get back in the saddle. We have over a year's worth of stuff to get on the radio. Last time something happened like this we were scooped up within two weeks. We never dreamed it would be this hard to get a gig but after the Janet Jackson mishap all PD's and radio company's are scared to death of what their jocks will do next to lose advertising revenue. I guess they are still holding their breath.
5) What is your best way to get your foot in the door?
It's all networking before you lose the gig. That's the part I never cared about. When we work at a station we dedicate ourselves 100% to the gig and station. We don't make demo tapes to send out to contacts once a month.
6) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
I sent 100 douche bags to Howard Stern when he was calling his station on Sirius Douche 100. I had contact with those guys in the past and was offered a chance to sit in one day while they were looking for a replacement for Jackie. I never heard back from them. Either they were too busy or we just didn't fit in with what they are planning.
7) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
We want a gig at a rock station or talk station.
8) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
Our show has always been personality-driven. We are able with ease to establish a friendship with our audience. We do local topical bits and the station events we throw are second to none. The events, along with listener interaction are the keys to our show.
9) In your opinion, what has been your biggest career accomplishment in the industry?
The money we have raised for charity and the lives we have touched. The $35,000 for the six fallen firefighters in Worcester, $25,000 for the Kosovo Refugees, $10,000 for the Birdsey & Bdub Make a Difference Fund, $5,000 for the Make A Wish Foundation. It's something using your ability and position on the radio to do some good. Every jock should take advantage of that and shame on them if they don't.
10) Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
Back on the radio having all kinds of success. Kicking the ass of our competition and ruling whatever market we end up in.
Bonus Questions
What is the newest movie you have seen?
Well it's not a new movie, but we just saw "Every Which Way But Loose." GREAT Great movie. So many little things I forgot about. It made for a great night of laughs and beers ya know. Just relaxing and laughing.
