Overnight Briefing & General Reality Check - May 27, 2016
May 27, 2016
Aye, aye, sir!
Memorial Day Weekend usually marks the unofficial start of the summer boating season, though lots of boaters are still hurting from high fuel prices just like motorists hitting the road. Typical fuel consumption for a 'low usage" boating enthusiast: seven to 10 gallons an hour.
Most popular Boat names (Boat-US Graphics Dep't):
--The Good Life
--It's About Time
--Seas the Day (or some variation the Carpe Diem theme)
Editor's note: FirstBoat adds these names: Serenity, Happy Ours, Family Time, The Black Pearl, Feelin' Nauti; Andiamo; Knot on Call; High Maintenance and Just Chillin.
The Indy 500:
Sunday, the 100th running (!!!) of the Indianapolis 500 will crank up at 12 pm (Eastern), broadcast on ABC. Indianapolis Speedway was opened in 1909; the first 500 was held in 1911. The race used to be held on Memorial Day, which, of course, was May 30 until all the holidays got moved to Monday. Now, it's on a Sunday, because of TV revenue, etc. By the way --in 1914, a new rule was implemented: no alcohol consumption while racing!
Also, although it'll be the 105th anniversary of the annual event, it's actually just the 100th race, since the race was suspended during the war years (as an example to people to save gas) in WWI (1917-18) and WWII (1942-45).
DARIUS RUCKER will be doing the National Anthem and there's the traditional singing of "Back Home Again in Indiana" by JOSH KAUFMAN, the Season Five winner of "The Voice." Country singer KEITH URBAN will be MARIO ANDRETTI's passenger in the "Fastest Seat in Sports" car and team owner ROGER PENSKE will drive the pace car. Then, it's "Drivers, start your engines!" (It used to be "Gentlemen" before DANICA PATRICK became one of the drivers). This year's front row has JAMES HINCHCLIFFE (driving a Honda), JOSEF NEWGARDEN (Chevrolet) and RYAN HUNTER-REAY (Honda). Actor CHRIS PINE (star of upcoming films "Star Trek Beyond" and "Hell Or High Water") will wave the green flag.
