I've always said that you're not really a disc jockey until you've had the great experience of sleeping on the floor of a radio station to pull an extra shift that happens in less time than it would take to drive home and back. Today’s automation systems make that a little more difficult. Still, dedication is challenged early on, and whoever really wants in will find a way to go above and beyond. That's why I'm sitting in a church parking lot at 7 a.m. on a Sunday morning. My youngest daughter has a thirst to get involved with all things guitar at North Point Church in Georgia. This girl wants to play so bad she’s willing to give up her one day to sleep in so she can participate and work her way up. The music that comes out of this place is amazing and intense, she’s smart to do this.
Arriving early to learn and work the sound board is one of those opportunities to go above and beyond and to prove dedication. We've all heard the stories of the parents who got their kids to the ice rink for a 5 a.m. practice, or chaperoned dances until all hours of the morning. This is what ‘she’ does. Paying dues goes way beyond a monetary amount. It's time well spent, even if it means sitting in a parking lot when you too could be sleeping in.
