My doorbell rang, and I opened the door to my next doors neighbor's 11 year old son standing on the porch. "I'm locked out of my house," he tells me. Josh gets picked up and dropped off by his camp bus, and no one is home at his house. We both text his mom, and receive no response. Josh ends up spending two hours with us because mom got stuck in traffic and her cell phone battery died. She assumed Josh would let himself into the house, with a key they keep hidden outside but Josh forgot where it was located; he never had to use it before. My kids loved having an extra guest for dinner that night, and Josh loved seeing his mom arrive, because until she showed up we had no clue where she was. Could this stressful situation be avoided? Maybe. A charged cell phone battery is always good, and refreshing families on some easy safety measures, like checking fire extinguishers and where hidden keys are hidden, could be good, now that schools out for summer.
