Daughter number two has been preparing for the SAT test this summer, and I know have a love-hate relationship with the calculator option on her cell phone. I have learned that just because someone gets a good grade in a math class does not guarantee the critical thinking skills needed to pass a standardized test, one that could make or break the chance at a college acceptance letter. The big discussion in my circle of mom friends concerns how we feel that the SAT does not accurately represent our child's skill and ability level regarding current and higher education. Yet, outside the SAT and the ACT, we have nothing. So, what do we do? Pay for extra classes and tutors to help prepare our kids to take a test that we don't really believe in. But, because it is the only option, it's just what we have to do. In my world, this marks the first week back to school, make that the first-last week of high school for my daughter, Hannah. What once started with a ride in a carefully installed car seat to preschool, has transformed into my daughter driving herself to school. I'm not sure which was harder, waiting on the lottery to see if she would get a preschool slot, or watching her drive away this morning, knowing it was one of her last times. Okay, I do know what is harder: the denial. I am not the only mom dealing with this today.
