"Danger, Will Robinson, danger," rang through my head as I passed by a creepy, old-time touring bus parked right where I usually start my weekly hike. Upon first glance, it seemed haunted, the back of the bus read, “We know the way. We’ll bring you home.” Signs offering free food to hikers surrounded the area, and young girls were setting up instruments and drinks outside. They even had an Easter Bunny for photo-ops. One look online revealed the tribe this bus belongs to and the information was not good.
Several of these busses exist, and they are all used by the same group of communal people. Originally, they were used to follow rock acts like Bob Dylan, Phish; then, they found parking spots at large festivals, opening their lifestyle to a whole new audience. The pandemic has paused many festivals, so it seems these travelers are seeking other public areas that large groups of people gather. My friend that works at the park informed me that this group has visited several times for Appalachian Trail kick-off events. I’ve shared enough details if you choose to google (try "tribe" and "red bus").
In order to keep the good news stories coming let's be mindful and sincere with our listeners too. A little caring matters. Remind listeners to stay connected with friends, traveling alone is not always wise, use that buddy system, keep a full tank of gas, if you see something say something, all that wise kind of stuff. Communicators can craft the right words in a caring way without throwing fear in the air. But they're out there. Be careful y'all.
