I was first introduced to the ABC Concept, “Always Be Closing” by Dave “Rambo” Darus, and my boss at Interscope Records in 1990. In our first meeting as a promotion staff, we watched the movie Glengarry Glen Ross together in order to create a mindset of urgency and abruptness to the final destination of getting “THE ADD.” “Coffee Is for Closers.” Alec Baldwin’s character Blake was sent in to revive a failing real estate sales team from going under. This editor’s interpretation of Blake is that he was an arrogant asshole who treated the staff as incompetent underlings. Hardly a tactic to create positive morale leading to success.
As a promotion person for 30 years, I have to admit I love the thrill of the chase, the feeling of accomplishment when getting “THE ADD.” It’s like heroin to an addict, the sweet smell of success. In recent years I’ve delved into the world of self-development. The concept of ABC has shifted for me. The thrill of the chase is fleeting, draining and not thrilling at all. Have I gone completely mad? No, I just found a more productive way to approach life. Instead of hunting, I prefer fishing. Instead of making, I prefer manifesting, instead of grinding, I prefer gratitude, and instead of force I prefer flow. The energy in that gig is frenetic and very YANG. You get the idea. It’s not that you shouldn’t be in action, it’s the mindset of the action itself. Inspired action.
When something is forced it’s painful and ultimately limits our success because it’s based on the ego’s fears and insecurities. It often leads to burn out, exhaustion and a gaping disconnect from one’s true desires of success. Who wants to go to work every day as a zombified stress monger? Me, please me, bring on the misery, wretchedness, distress and unhappiness. I love thriving in torment…said no one EVER! We all have responsibilities, deadlines, numbers to crunch, ratings to achieve, singles to sell, accolades to accrue, but it doesn’t have to be horrifying. We aren’t curing cancer or doing brain surgery where people’s lives are at stake. We are however, mavens of magic. Music is an important part of people's way of life, as it plays a key role in religious rituals, rites of passage ceremonies, community choirs, proms, weddings, funerals etc. Songs bring joy, memories and fun into people’s lives. Lyrics are messages of hope, wonder, and connection.
Here’s where “The Law of Least Effort” comes to play. “Nature’s intelligence functions with effortless ease . . . with carefreeness, harmony, and love. And when we harness the forces of harmony, joy, and love, we create success and good fortune with effortless ease.” This is the antithesis of “Always Be Closing.” By being in alignment with the divine force of the universe, giving your attention to your INTENTIONS for success, and executing it with ease and surrendered action, your life will be amazing. Today I choose to shift the trajectory of ABC “Always be Closing,” to ABC “Always Be Conscious.” I choose to be the lighthouse, not the tugboat. I hope this concept serves you as it has for me, after all it’s always an Inside-Project.
