“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change” – Dr. Wayne Dyer
Has there ever been a time in your life when you were so focused on something, that you saw it everywhere? I can distinctly recall two personal experiences where this was prevalent. My car lease was expiring, and a certain make and model of my desired new ride was in the forefront of my mind. I swore every time I got on the freeway, drove down the street, and cruised the parking lot at the grocery store there were hundreds of them. Did the local dealer have a special running on that particular vehicle? I highly doubt it. Similarly, when I was in the thick of my arduous two year journey to get pregnant, there were bulging babes abound at every turn. All along the way to work, and all the way back, I’ve looked and I’ve looked and kept careful track, but all that I noticed except for my lack, was herds of expectant ladies’ swelling zygote sacks. (Thanks Dr. Seuss) It wasn’t a pandemic where people were stuck canoodling for months on end to increase the number of buns in the oven. It’s just that my all-consuming attention was fixated on them.
We all have a unique lens through which we view life. Let’s say you witnessed an accident where a person was hit by a car. You were on the west corner and the car was coming at you. What you saw was the driver texting, unaware of the pedestrian crossing the street. Another witness was on the East corner and the car had passed them, they saw the victim oblivious to the traffic, engrossed in texting themselves and not looking up while attempting to cross. Who is at fault? Whose perspective is accurate? Each witness is seeing the same thing from a different angle. Does that make one right and one wrong?
Now imagine it’s the dead of winter on the East Coast. Everything is frozen over, the trees are barren and there’s a darkness over the horizon. The sullen gloomy weather feels like it’s been hanging around for eons. The sun hasn’t shone its magical, bright, beautiful face in months. Does that mean it’s not there? When a farmer plants corn, do you think he sits and stares at the dirt all day waiting for it to arrive? I mean he can’t see it…. Similarly - If someone told you not to notice the pink elephant in the room, what’s the first thing you are going to do? Look at the elephant course!
As a life coach, it’s important for me to ascertain my client’s perception of their life experience in order to guide their shift. I believe inquiry is paramount in gaining awareness of their current views and beliefs that may be blocking their progress.
For Example:
Do you have to see things to believe they exist?
What are you missing by not being open to everything that surrounds you?
What are you not seeing that you could be seeing?
What do you drive by daily that you never noticed before?
What are seven other ways you can interpret this current situation that’s plaguing you?
What’s opposite of something you would think, say, do or see?PERSPECTIVE IS EVERYTHING:
Discomfort >>>>Growth
Problems >>>> Challenges
Rejection >>>>Redirection
Triggers >>>>Reveal Wounds
Darkness >>>> Reveals Light
Failures >>>> Lessons
Fears >>>> Teachers
Pain >>>>PowerSome other things to consider to aid in drawing in life from a more mindful lens… You always have the power to choose a new view. In any moment in time, you can revise your eyes. Having a happy, hopeful perspective on life is just as contagious as a negative point of view that spins itself out, to our detriment and the detriment of those around us. Go inward and ask your intuition for guidance. Oftentimes we are so harried, that we do the usual, instead of the magical. Lastly, have some damn fun. Energy flows where your attention grows. Happy people create happy lives. Here’s looking at you kid! I hope this has served you as it has for me. After all, it’s always and Inside-Project.
“There are always flowers for those who want to see them” – Henry Matisse
