BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
24 years in radio. 17 years at KGOT. 9 years as PD. 5 years as morning show host
1. Were you set up to broadcast from home before all of this began?
No.
2. Were there any challenges making sure that you were able to get on the air from home?
No. Pretty easy set-up.
3. What’s it like doing the show from home?
A lot more distractions with 3 kids (preteen and 2 toddlers) wondering who I’m talking to while tucked away in our extra bedroom.
4. These are ever-evolving times for PDs. Are you doing anything special with the music?
No, staying the course with music. Trying to stay as positive and upbeat as we can.
5. Have you added any news-type content?
Nothing major. Only local updates with a “Support Local” business page that promotes everything from curb side pickup/delivery to free Facebook live classes and events.
6. Are you adjusting the way that you engage the audience through social media?
The occasional light hearted memes, Facebook live updates, and sharing the local official new conferences.
7. What’s one thing that you’ve quickly learned during this crisis?
That radio can be done effectively from home. We have the technology and I don’t feel a disconnect from the audience that I thought I would. Social media and new things like Zoom can be used to our benefit.
8. What led you to a career in radio?
Being the class clown in school.
9. What was your favorite station when you were a kid? Jock?
Surprisingly the current station I’m on now, 101.3 KGOT. I’m truly living my dream of being the morning show host for Alaska’s Number 1 Hit Music Station. Bob Lester here in Alaska has always been a mentor of mine from the beginning and now I call him a good friend.
10. Who were your mentors? Who would you say has influenced your career the most?
Bill Stewart (Stu) was my first PD at KGOT that taught me about the word NO and protecting the brand and not selling out. Other influencers for my career have been my peers that I enjoy listening to now. JJ Kincaid, Jesse Lozano, Man@Large, and JoJo Wright are just some that I have always enjoyed and look up to.
Bonus Questions
When this is all over, which artist would you (respectfully) like to hug first?
I’ve always had a man-crush on Justin Timberlake.
