BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started out at nights then moved away for school. When I came back, I started back at the bottom being a Remote Tech. I have been the Promotions Director, the receptionist, and assisted the sales team all while being on air. Now I am the Program Director for WJFX.
1. How would you describe your first radio gig?
My first ever job in radio, I was a Click Chick! "Click Chicks live on Clickhop.com!" 106.3 was owned by Oasis Radio Group and was a Hip Hop station controlled by the audience. You want to hear a song, go and give it an up arrow. You don't want to hear a song, give it a down arrow. It was pretty fun for my first gig and the question below answers just how that happened.
2. What led you to a career in radio?
This is the most random story and I get embarrassed every time I tell it. It starts out with me being a Hooters Girl. (Yea yea, I've heard it all.) Luckily, it was only one of my two jobs at the time because while I was working there, Hooters in Fort Wayne closed without any notice. We showed up to work one day for our shifts and the doors were locked. You may know of a guy named Chris Cruise. He got wind of the situation and said 'Hey, let's give them jobs.' This was not the career path I was on; I was studying Sports Management and Marketing but thought why not, it doesn't hurt to try it. Quite a few of the Hooters Girls 'tried out' to be Click Chicks, but only three made it to the end. I was one of the three and here we are like 10 years later. Who would have thought!?
3. You get to be on the air in your hometown. What is that part of your career like for you?
This is actually my everyday life. I was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I have only ever worked in radio in Fort Wayne too. I love this city and all the improvements it's made over the years and continues to make.
4. What is it like for you to still be able to hit the studio every day and do your midday show?
I am lucky to still be on middays while also being the Program Director. Being on air is the fun part! It is tough to balance it all some days but I enjoy what I do so if I have to work a bit more or harder, I do it.
5. Who would be a "dream guest" to have sit in with you on your show?
The Beatles are my all-time favorite band. If I could have all of them together again and in my studio, I would fan girl, hard. I would just love to hear about all of their experiences and how they changed music forever.
6. Like everyone else you're a multi-tasker, also covering afternoons across the hall on Country sister WBTU (US 93.3). How much fun is that for you?
Country is where my heart belongs. I was raised on the good stuff - 90s country! I am happy I can continue to be in the country music world even though I had to switch my brain over to Top 40 and all things Pop Culture.
7. You've been in the PD chair for three months now. Any surprises? How's it been going?
It's been going well. I am enjoying my new position and being able to be more creative. Luckily, no surprises so far (knock on wood).
8. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Stick with it. It may be hard, and you may hate some days, but stick with it. I never thought I would actually be the Program Director of a highly rated, heritage Top 40 station but here I am. If I gave up when things got weird or tough, I wouldn't have been able to have this awesome opportunity.
9. What was your favorite station(s) to listen to when you were a kid? Jock(s)?
HOT 107.9! I technically wasn't supposed to listen to it when I was younger, sorry Mom, but I did. She didn't want us listening because when I was younger it was hip hop and she thought it was inappropriate. Well, I listened anyway because what kid wanted to listen to their Mom and Dad's old people music?
10. Who were your mentors? Who would you say has influenced your career the most?
Chris Cruise, Nugget Johnson, and ICE were my very first mentors and sparked my interest in radio. Robbie Mack, who I worked with for 8 years at WJFX, was also a huge mentor to me and my career.
