Please outline your radio career so far:
All over the Midwest, from WZEE/Madison to WKFS/Cincy and most recently WHOT/Youngstown.
1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
Sleep-deprivation at WGTZ in Dayton during college from 2000-02
2) How would you describe the radio landscape in your market?
I compare WUSQ (Country) and WINC (Hot AC) to the Yankees and Red Sox. Kiss takes bites out of everyone and we love being the underdog. We also get invaded by D.C. and Hagerstown signals.
3) How would you compare Kiss to other stations you've worked at?
Kiss and Clear Channel are all about community. The coolest thing about a lot of CC Top 40 PDs is they are an open source of information and philosophy. I have had very little of that in previous gigs.
4) Are you wearing more "hats" than you have in the past?
Isn't it great that some of your friends from college/home think you "play radio" and don't have a serious job? I'm part computer programmer/marketing director/researcher/mediator/negotiator and it's all under the umbrella of Program Director.
5) What is your favorite part of the job?
Seeing a promotion go well. Small market PDs know the feeling of pulling off something your market hasn't seen.
6) What is the most challenging part of the job?
Clear Channel is so diverse and has such a wealth of information and knowledge within the company. Keeping up with just that would be a full-time job. My OM, David Miller, is so locked into that stuff that he dumbs it down for me.
7) Could you give us a little insight into your on-air staff?
Ace and TJ have made an immediate impact in the year they've been with Kiss. Lori is my midday diva. She's made my transition here as easy as possible. I hope no one steals her away any time soon. I try not to screw things up from 3-7p, and JoJo is piped in from WIBT in Charlotte. His show is as much a forum as a radio show. He's always talking about women and relationships, and the numbers show that they are responding. Tony T holds down weekends.
8) If you could add one full-time position to your budget right now, what would it be?
Some sort of imaging/production/research/engineer guy.
9) Who are your favorite air personalities not on your staff and why do you like them?
I admire a lot of different personalities. I really enjoy Mark and Mercedes at KMXB in Las Vegas. Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio is so great at getting what he wants from his callers and guests. Kraig Karson from WXSS in Milwaukee has always been one of my favorites, and if I don't mention Toby Knapp at WIHT, he may never return my calls.
10) What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do it for a living?
That on any given day, you can make a difference and affect many people's lives.
That and the casual dress code.
Bonus Questions
