1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
When I was in high school in Pittsburgh, I ended up calling a radio station and getting on the air as "Stupid Guitar Boy," where I would play songs really bad and people would call and guess what song I "destroyed." I ended up doing it on a nightly basis for B94's Bender (now mornings at KBKS/Seattle).
2) What led you to a career in radio?
Eventually when "Stupid Guitar Boy" got in college, I then did an internship for JohnDaveBubbaShelly (B94 Morning Show) ... and that's when I decided I'd rather do radio than work for a living.
3) How would you describe the radio landscape in your market?
Urban and Country! Yet we manage to fit in because Memphis has one of the youngest median ages in the country.
4) What makes your station unique? How would you compare it to other stations you've worked at?
The fact that we are one of the few local O&O Pop stations left allows us to do a lot of "out of the box" promotions and on-air stuff that you can't get away with at some of the other stations in the country. It's one of the last refuge points for "no limit creativity" in Top 40 radio.
5) Are you wearing more "hats" than you have in the past?
Yea, I always liked imaging so whatever station I worked at, whether I got Imaging stripes or not, I would always work my way into that production studio!
6) What is your favorite part of the job?
Getting in front of a crowd! Especially hostile ones that I tame. When I get to introduce bands in front of thousands of people who want me to get off the stage so the band can come on, I take just a second longer to get people a little more fired up to see the band. Sounds a little sadistic, but what a rush!
7) What is the most challenging part of the job?
Dealing with 'in the office politics,' blahhhhh..."Don't say that to that person or they will get mad" ... it's radio! Suck it up!
8) What artist would we be surprised to find on your iPod?
Nine Inch Nails ... ha ha! Don't even play, son! I even have all their unreleased songs, and Trent Reznor is the only person that I would be all "geeky" interviewing. It would be like Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney ... "Remember that time when...."
9) What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
You pick between my top two facts:
1) I opened up and was on the bill for the very last ever INXS concert with Michael Hutchens. I played "The Star Spangled Banner" on my guitar (September 27, 1997, and I was 17years old)
2) I was friends in high school with Christina Aguliera and almost asked her to out prom, but was a day too late! DOH!
10) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
There are soooo many, but I think Adam Bomb in Atlanta is just everything a night show should be. Bender in Seattle had an awesome night show and still has people in Pittsburgh talking about how awesome he was to this day! Chris Booker, who just left Philly, was my inspiration for just off-the-wall stuff when he was in Pittsburgh at 104.7 The Revolution.
Bonus Questions
Which character on a TV series most reflects your personality?
Macgyver! Ohh, snap, he said "Screw your gun! I got bubblegum and paper clips!" And he used what he had around him to get stuff done, not sitting around saying, "I wish I had 'this' right now."
