1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
It was a great learning experience -- by that I mean I learned how to start at the absolute bottom and work your ass off if you want to grow. Wanna know what the absolute bottom is? Try spinning warped polka records at 4:30 on a Sunday morning between obituaries of Czechoslovakian people and having every old person in the county call in and crucify you for messing up. This made interning for any civilized station seem like hitting the lottery, but I got my first set of calls.
2) What led you to a career in radio?
My inability to hit the curve ball and the desire to not wear a tie.
3) What is your favorite part of the job?
THE FUN ELEMENT! When the whole staff is having fun, and you're pretty sure that no matter what happens tomorrow, you'll find a way to have fun, it's easy to get up at 3:30a. I also work with some very gifted people who have my back, and as all of us know, loyalty is hard to come by in this business.
4) What artist would we be surprised to find on your iPod?
The Cure; it doesn't matter if I'm up, down or even working out, something about the melodies hits me. Oh, I'm also a HUGE closet Hall & Oates fan. Tell anyone and I'll kill your puppy.
5) What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I don't have a criminal record.
6) Could you give us a little insight into your on-air staff?
Happy to. Our midday guy, Famous Amos, is as smooth as my head. He is as solid a performer as you could ever want. NEVER screws up. Timmy Daniels, our APD/MD/afternoon fool has a special desire to make our station musically perfect. I've seen him massage a log for waaaayyyy too long. He's my right-hand man, and it feels good to know when I'm out, he's got the wheel. Derek Lee, our night stud/imaging director, is truly a character. He is all about the listener and FUN! Bottom line here is that everyone takes PRIDE in our work and we're willing to go the extra mile.
7) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
I just love being a dad. My wife Tricia and I just had our third about a month ago. Big ups to Peyton, he's 5; Reagan, she's 3; and new baby Nolan!!!
8) What music do you listen to when you're not working?
I'm a big-time classic hip-hop fan. Crank up some Rob Base, LL Cool J or Run D.M.C. and we'll get along just fine.
9) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Earn it. You will never be noticed or rewarded for all your efforts, so earn it. Don't piss and moan when you don't get a pat on the back; EARN the one you will get. Twice as sweet.
10) What advice you would give people new to the business?
Take that three-hour Sunday overnight shift and KILL. Take every opportunity and make someone notice how good you're getting. Take your PD up on every chance they give you ... and beg for airchecks!
Bonus Questions
What ringtone do you have on your cell?
When anyone from our building calls, I have DMX "Party Up," the hook where he goes: "Y'all gonna make me lose my mind" ... not far from the truth.
