NAME:Wayne DPOSITION:APD/MD/NightsSTATION:KCLDMARKET:St. Cloud, MNOWNER:Leighton Broadcasting
1 Please outline your radio career so far:
KDWB/Minneapolis: Intern
KQQL/KJZI: Board Op.
KCLD/St. Cloud: PT/Swing; now APD/MD/Nights2 How would you describe your first radio gig?
This IS my first gig and I'm having fun! Started out doing part-time swing shifts, in spring of 2004, and I'm now part of the full time programming staff. Proof that hard work pays off!!
3 What led you to a career in radio?
I knew I had to do something in broadcasting and I didn't know if I wanted to do TV. I couldn't do anything else (hopefully, I won't need to be an "On The Beach" interview subject with Dave Hoeffel anytime soon).
4 What would you like to be doing 10 years from now?
PD of a CHR/POP or HOT AC station. I would love to move away from the cold winter weather … down to Florida or out to Malibu if Joel Denver has room for me in the basement. At that point in my career I'd just like to still be successful - market size won't really matter!
5 What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
KDWB EASILY!!! I grew up in Minneapolis, so it was KDWB (with WLOL mixed in there a little bit). It was so great to grow up in that market. I got the chance to learn and intern with some of the best air talent in radio today: Scotty Davis, JJ, Curt Copeland, JJ Kincaid, Wes McKane and Tone E. Fly! Someday, I hope to work at least one shift for Rob Morris at KDWB ;-)
6 Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Like I mentioned earlier, Scotty Davis! I like JJ @ KDWB too, but I've been listening to Scotty for YEARS! He is so creative, always original. I remember an aircheck where Scotty showed off his 'freestyle' skills, rapping along with "California Love" by 2 Pac. It was great. I have really learned a lot from him.
7 What music do you listen to when you're not working?
EVERYTHING!!! I really like Jay Z, also Fall Out Boy, Black Eyed Peas, Kaiser Chiefs and this DJ out of Austin, D:Fuse, he's nuts.
8 What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Working hard is what makes you successful! I was told by jocks I interned with, that if I worked my butt off, I'd get places fast. I became the part-timer who would never leave. In less than two years, I've graduated to APD/MD/Night Jock (with decent ratings, too)!
9 What advice you would give people new to the business?
You have to remember to do what's best for you. Take a little bit from every person you meet, but no matter what, ALWAYS be a student. In radio, you can learn forever.
10 Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
We did a car giveaway not too long ago. Sure, a car is a great prize. But the listener had to jump through so many hoops just to play. Get an entry form from the newspaper, go to the dealer and test drive a car, then listen for us to call their name, call us within so many minutes and then be present to win! It was SOOOO insane to try and explain that!
Bonus Questions
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
My dad was a tree trimmer, but I'm too lazy for that! I wanted to be either a baseball player or He Man Master of the Universe. My mom said fireman, but I don't think so - too much work. At the risk of embarrassing myself, I really wanted to be a pro wrestler. No, seriously! I even had a name picked out. Email me and I just might share it with you!!!
