1 What led you to a career in radio?
I loved the morning show on my local top 40 station and when they came to my junior high I officially became a stalker.
2 Since your arrival in Boise, how would you assess the radio landscape?
Coming from the much smaller Idaho Falls, I was surprised how much more popular country stations are here. We've got TWO successful country stations in our building.
3 The station has shifted to a more Mainstream Pop approach since you became PD. What prompted the adjustment?
I don't view it as something NEW for Magic, I'm just pointing it back in the right direction, musically. This station was at its best when the music was right-down-the-middle Top 40.
4 Could you give us a little insight into your on air staff?
In the morning, Shamus runs at a million ideas a minute, Tara's the funniest girl in all of morning radio and I sit in the third chair and BS with my 2 best friends. In the midday Valentine keeps it cool and casual and goes to the always-ringing phones. Miggy Santos laughs with his listeners and fills everyone with nuttin' buh luv in the afternoon. And at night, Matty has female callers convinced he's harmless.
5 What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
I listened mostly to Z103 in Idaho Falls, but when I'd go on vacation in Salt Lake, I couldn't wait to hear Hot 94-9 (KZHT). They played Hip Hop ...and that stuff wasn't on the air in Idaho Falls.
6 Looking back, which years hold the best musical memories for you and who were your favorite acts at that time?
I think 1997 was the best year for Top 40 radio. That was the year Shania Twain, Notorious BIG, No Doubt, Backstreet Boys and Third Eye Blind all sounded great on the radio together.
7 Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
Not really, but I really need to get one. I'm thinking about becoming a skateboarder.
8 What's your take on the increase to $325,000 for violators of indecency rules?
I'm not big on indecent stuff on the air. I think you should always talk to your 29-year-old listener as if their 8-year-old kid is in the room. I'LL never get fined, so raise it all you want.
9 What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
The thing that I'm freaking out about TODAY probably won't even be memorable next WEEK!
10 What advice you would give people new to the business?
Work hard, do what your boss tells you to do, and proudly announce your accomplishments.
Bonus Questions
What's the best sweeper/liner you've ever heard?
You've probably heard this one: "We're Arbitron rated #7 ... SCREW YOU ARBITRON!"
