Please outline your radio career so far:
KHTT - Tulsa, OK
KJMM - Tulsa, OK
KSME - Fort Collins, CO1 What led you to a career in radio?
I've always had this passion for music, and well quite honestly, I can't sing or rap or even play an instrument for that matter, so I figured, what better way to stay around music than to be in radio? That, plus the fact that I just love to talk, I felt it would be quite enjoyable.
2 What is your favorite part of the job?
There is more than just one thing. I love being able to hear all the different music, the interaction with the listeners and just the general atmosphere of radio. Being able to touch people's lives is something I never thought I'd be able to do, and radio has given me that outlet.
3 Could you give us a little insight into the KSME on air staff?
Chris Kelly is the best PD anyone could ask for. He has taken me under his wing and has begun to impart morsels of knowledge from his years in the business. Oh yeah, he also puts on a mean morning show. Bender just re-joined us and is everything you could ask for in a jock. Big Rob is a fresh young talent who 'gets it' and puts on a slammin' night show every night.
4 Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
I'd have to say Wendy Williams. She's been through so much, pulled herself up and isn't afraid to ask the tough questions. I respect her for that.
5 What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
I really started to get into radio when I was around 12 years old, and living in the Bay Area, there was only one station to listen to, KMEL. That is what started my love affair with radio and Hip-Hop.
6 Looking back, which years hold the best musical memories for you and who were your favorite acts at that time?
I'd have to say the early to mid 90's. That was the time I fell in love with music and was introduced to R&B/Hip-Hop. At the time, I was listening to SWV, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, TLC, all of those artists from that time period.
7 Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
I love to collect all things San Francisco Giants and I have this nasty poker habit that I can't seem to break. I better hope I don't end up in Las Vegas with a radio gig, I'll go broke trying to bust Phil Hellmuth at a table.
8 What music do you listen to when you're not working?
It always seems to come back to R&B and Hip-Hop. I love the smoother R&B such as John Legend, India Arie, Raheem DeVaughn, etc. and you can't go wrong with The Roots, Common or Lupe Fiasco.
9 What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do it for a living?
The constant change in radio keeps the drive in me. Nothing ever stays the same, even day to day, and being around for all the new exciting things is something that drives me to want to stay in it for a long time. Plus, what other career allows you to listen to music and talk all day long?
10 What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
I never stop learning. One will never know everything about this business, so soak up everything and learn all that you can.
Bonus Questions
What's the last ringtone you downloaded for your phone?
Lupe Fiasco "Kick Push." Let me tell you, that kid has skills!
