NAME:Deidre GottPOSITION:MD/NightsSTATION:KHFI, 96.7 KISSFMOWNER:Clear Channel RadioMARKET:Austin, TX
Please outline your radio career so far: (station/date, station/date, etc.)
I started at the very bottom of the totem pole as a promotions whore (and this is after I got a college degree). My parents thought I was crazy taking a job for $5.15 an hour. Then I just kept bugging everyone from programming to production to teach me anything they could. I became a board op, got an on-air shift, and basically was at the station all the time. They had to keep moving me up!
1) What led you to a career in radio?
I got a degree in theatre and finally realized what a crappy actress I was. I like music, and ever since I was young I thought radio was super cool, so why the hell not take a shot at it?
2) What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
I listened to Channel Z 95.5, the alternative station in Springfield, MO. But then they turned it into this crappy "Alice" station.
3) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio? Hobbies?
I thought radio was a 24/7 job. I sing with a cheesy "cover's band" and I also play piano.
4) What do you do to keep ahead of your listeners in terms of trends, likes and dislikes?
I'm lucky to be in the live music capital of the world so I see tons of shows. I obsessively read music magazines and discuss bands with my musician friends. Sometimes, I think my PD thinks I'm a little too ahead of the trends.
.
5) What music do you listen to when you're not working?
I'm extremely eclectic with my music tastes. In my car right now I have Jeff Buckley, Hot Hot Heat, Aslyn, Jamie Cullum, Tegan and Sarah, and Jackie Mittoo.
6) What Movie or TV program best describes your life?
Bridget Jones' Diary
7) If they made a movie of your life, who would play your part - and why?
I'm totally saying Angelina Jolie, 'cause we look nothing alike. The only thing we kinda have in common is she has DSL and I give great head. Can I say that? (Ed. note: is it warm in here?)
8) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Do not get involved with co-worker's drama and gossip.
9) What advice you would give people new to the business?
Be available at all times and make sure people know you're available
10) Looking around your office, desk, walls, etc. ... how would you describe your working space?
A beautiful mess of CDs, music mags, and band posters
Bonus Questions
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I used to watch reruns of a TV show, where Sally Field played a nun who could fly (Ed. note: uhh... that would be "The Flying Nun"), which made me want to be a nun. My family wasn't even Catholic. They were Southern Baptist
