1) Please outline your radio career so far:
Kicked around as a jock from 1989 - 1999 including stops in Elmira (WNGZ), Frederick (WAFY), Richmond (WTVR), and Norfolk (WPTE). First Programming gig was at WMRV/Binghamton, then on to WLAN/Lancaster, WHKF/Harrisburg and now here at WNCI.
2) What led you to a career in radio?
I sucked at everything else.
3) It's our 10th anniversary this year. What were you doing 10 years ago?
I don't know, but I'm sure it didn't involve a donkey, a midget, my sister, a large jar of vasoline and video camera ... at least I'm fairly sure ...
4) What would you like to be doing 10 years from now?
Certainly not what I was doing 10 years ago ... allegedly doing, of course ....
5) Using one sentence for each, how would you describe the on-air staff at the station?
The Morning Zoo with Dave Kaelin & Jimmy: Old.
Andy Clark - Middays: Really old.
Chris Davis - Afternoons: Old, but with good hair.
Joey Hoops - Nights: Young, but sounds older than everybody else combined.
Actually, this is a tremendous staff that has been succeeding at a high level for a long time. You don't have the success that WNCI has enjoyed over the years without great air talent, and we have some of the best in the country! (Ed note: hey Mikey ... you left out the part about grabbing 2005 Station Of The Year honors - Congrats!)
6) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Eric Worden! Right now, I think he is the morning guy at BOB in Norfolk. Probably the most relatable personality I've ever heard. Tremendous guy off the air, too.
7) What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
WAAL/Binghamton - they had numerous incarnations over the years, but I remember the "Hot-FM" days the most.
8) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
Yankee baseball. If you're a Sox fan like JT Bosch, you can kiss my pinstriped booty! Sox fans aren't allowed to talk junk until they win about 20 more World Series - and that ain't happening in my lifetime, so shadup!
9) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
People, not playlists, make the real difference. Two stations can play the exact same music and have the same signal strength, but the one with jocks and support people that take the time to understand and relate to the listener in a unique and entertaining manner will win EVERYTIME.
10) Podcasting. Instant downloads. Blogs. How can we use the ever-increasing digital technologies to keep people coming back to radio for their entertainment fix?
We have to stop looking at emerging technology as competition. Embrace it and use it to enhance the listening experience. I prefer to think of emerging technologies as marketing opportunities.
Bonus Questions
How did you get your on-air name?
My mom's maiden name is McCoy ... and it was much more radiogenic than my real last name. As for Michael - that was my mom's fault, too. She wanted to name me Malcolm ... YIKES!
