1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
Started out a "weekend warrior," doing board op work and before long, having my own show. First time I cracked the mic my break really sucked, which I yelled out at the top of my lungs. Of course, I had forgotten to turn the microphone off.
2) What led you to a career in radio?
I was always listening to radio, winning contests, and going to events, so I thought it might be fun to actually work in radio.
3) 2005 is our 10th anniversary. What were you doing 10 years ago?
I was working at a grocery store as a bag boy about to finish my last year in high school. That job only lasted 4 months. It stunk!
4) Using one sentence for each, how would you describe your on-air staff?
Fisher - The boy needs more Ritilin.
Dave Hawkins - The king of voice tracking.
Ryan Knight - Hmmm, I haven't figured him out yet.
Sean Carter - The most energetic man in radio..
5) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Kane on 93.3 FLZ. Because he makes me laugh!
6) How would you describe your radio market?
We're the "stroke capital of the USA." It's a small market that likes fried food.
7) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
No matter what you're doing in the production room, some always has to get in there right now and it's an emergency!
8) What is the best advice you would give to new programmers?
Admit when you make mistakes.
9) Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
Best - "Hunted House" is where we hide during Halloween and our listeners find us. One winner gets over $5000 in cash and prizes. We've been doing it for 20 years now.
Worst - "Pajama Jam" Our morning show gave one listener the chance to have us come to their house, provide breakfast and broadcast live. It was out in the middle of BFE, with no Marti shot, and we were mud boggin' with the station van.
10) What effect, if any, has industry consolidation had on your current situation?
In a cluster of six radio stations, we're all covering shifts on at least two stations - pretty much like everyone else in the industry these days.
Bonus Questions
What other on-air names have you used?
Kane, Boot Scootin' Scotty, and J.Y. Kelly
