KHKS/Dallas1. How would you describe your first radio gig?
My first radio gig was really the Pirate Radio station I built in my basement that broadcast within a three house radius on my block (The original LPFM). At 11 years old, I thought it would be a good idea to go to a broadcast school. I was accepted! At 14, I got my first 'paying' radio gig at a local station near my hometown of Milwaukee.
2. What led you to a career in radio?
I listened to WLS/Chicago & WOKY/Milwaukee in the 70's, when the big AM stations were cookin' and the more I listened, the more I wanted to be just like them!
3. It's our 10th anniversary this year. What were you doing 10 years ago?
I was just moving to Dallas, TX to be the Midday jock and Music Director for 'Mister' ED at KHKS.
4. What would you like to be doing 10 years from now?
It's hard to pinpoint a career path in this Industry as we may have been accustomed to in the past. Technology is changing so fast. Amazing new doors are opening every month in the radio Industry. I'd like to still be in the radio business developing and marketing new products and entertainment through the various devices Radio will have available at that time.
5. Compared to when you first came to town, how would you describe your market today?
The Charlotte market has continued to be ranked as one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Along the way, we have had new formats sign on, however, the best accomplishment has been maintaining our #1 Cume and Top 5 rank with Persons 12+/18-34/25-54 through all the changes.
6. Using one sentence for each, how would you describe the on-air staff at the station?
ACE & TJ (Mornings): Amazing true radio fans who know their audience and know how to intrigue.
KELI REYNOLDS (Middays/MD): Best Hire I ever made. CHAD ROCK (Afternoons): Major Market pro who is quick-witted and perfect in every break (don't even think about it ...he's under contract).
ERIC TYLER (Nights): Best phone jock in the biz.
7. Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
'Mister' Ed (San Antonio). He has a brilliant sense about imaging, story telling and theater of the mind in every break. There's not a lot of jocks that can pull it off like the Original 'Mister' Ed.
8. Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
I'm a pilot.
9. Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
Best promotion(s) were when I was working with Dan Kieley in Des Moines (KDWZ). We did some of the most creative, f'd up stuff, and got away with it on the radio.
10. What quality do you consider most important when evaluating a potential new hire?
Their passion and commitment to getting to where they want to be.
