Afternoons/PD 2005 to Present1 What led you to a career in radio?
I used to listen to Mancow, when he was on Wild 107 (Now 94.9 in San Francisco). I knew then and there that I wanted to do mornings and be on the air!
2 How would you describe the radio landscape in your market?
We are up against San Francisco and the in-market signals. My main competitors are the local Rhythmic and Hot AC; both are run by amazing, young, talented radio people.
3 What is your favorite part of the job?
Although I really enjoy programming and the creative aspects involved, there is nothing like being on the air.
4 Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
I think St. John at KYLD is one of the best Jocks ever. I also enjoy John London on KIFR (Free FM in SF). He's a genius. I used to listen to him on KMEL back in the day.
5 What music do you listen to when you're not working?
I'm a radio junkie so, besides my own, I listen to other stations to hear what's going on.
6 What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Hard work pays off ... but not necessarily at the station you are currently at.
7 What advice you would give people new to the business?
Get an internship. Be prepared to work for nothing for most of your career, and enjoy every minute of it!
8 Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
One of my favorite things about doing this job, next to the free food and CDs, is being able to help with local and national charities. We did an event recently for hurricane relief and our cluster raised over $125,000!!
9 Podcasting. Instant downloads. Blogs. How can we use the ever-increasing digital technologies to give radio listeners their entertainment fix?
With websites, you should be interactive with downloads and entertainment. Myspace is becoming a big way for listeners to connect with us.
10 What is the current state of the radio 'talent pool' ... slim pickings or a smorgasbord of talent? Please feel free to elaborate.
Slim pickings. Part of the problem is a lack of passion with people starting out. Then, there's the issue of management/consultants who overextend their existing talent by having them voice track multiple shifts, so they can save money. Thing is, this shrinks the talent pool, plus those who are working lose additional opportunities to practice their skills and grow as talent.
Bonus Questions
What station from Top 40's past would you like to have programmed?
KZQZ ... I think we had a chance but they gave up to soon.
