NAME:Trey MorganPOSITION:APD/Afternoons (KC101) and weekends (Z100)MARKET:New Haven, CT and New YorkOWNER:Clear Channel
Please outline your radio career so far:
I started as an intern at Clear Channel Radio/Brevard, FL. I was hired part-time to board op for the Talk station in the cluster, and then when the Classic Rock station flipped to Top 40/Rhythmic, I got my first shot on the air. I still don't know what my Program Director, Zac Davis was thinking after that first shift, but he kept me on the air. A few years later, I made the trip to KC101 in New Haven, CT to do nights. After a couple of months, I added part-time/swing duties at KISS 108 in Boston. After two years of trekking to Boston, I made the switch to Z100 in New York City. As of right now, I am APD/afternoons at KC101, part-time at Z100 and host a new TV show in Boston called S.R.O. (Standing Room Only).
1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
My first gig was good. I started as an intern at Clear Channel Radio in Brevard, FL. After three months of cleaning the station vans, they hired me as a part-time board op for the News/Talk station WMMB. I later got to host the Saturday night mix show on 95-1 The Beat (WBVD) and also worked with the programming department for Lite Rock 99.3 (WLRQ).
2) What led you to a career in radio?
Well, when I was a kid I always wanted to be a professional football player, civil engineer or a radio DJ. I think I always leaned towards radio. I used to sit in my bedroom listening to the DJs on 1061 KISS-FM in Dallas instead of doing homework. But as I got older, I found out how hard engineering classes were and I got injured playing football. I only had one choice left.
3) What makes your station unique? How would you compare it to other stations you've worked at?
KC101 has so much history. It is crazy to learn what this station means to New Haven, CT. The station has been around for 25 years and in that time, some of the best in the business have walked through these halls: Tom Poleman, Cadillac Jack, Kid Kelly, Scott Shannon, Tony Bristol, Kane, Jagger, Glen Beck, Lisa Paige, Kerry Collins, Kelly Nash and so many others. It really is cool to be in such good company.
4) Are you wearing more "hats" than you have in the past?
Umm, yeah. I am wearing more hats now than I was this morning and tomorrow I am sure I will be wearing even more.
5) What artist would we be surprised to find on your iPod?
Wow, most of them. Ray LaMontagne, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Norah Jones, Duffy, Amy Winehouse, Kings of Leon.
6) What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
That despite growing up in Texas I am a vegetarian. My friends in Texas always ask me, "So do you eat chicken?" or "How long you goin' to do this ... six months?"
7) Who would be a "dream guest" to have on your show?
My dad would be my dream guest. I know it's not a cool or funny answer, but that is the truth. Growing up, he would drag me to WBAP-A remotes to meet the personalities. He loved radio. Sadly, he died before getting the chance to hear me on the air. That and I think we would put on a pretty good show. He was hilarious!
8) What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
Growing up in Dallas was cool. The two stations I listen to most were 106.1 KISS-FM (KHKS) and 94.5 The Edge (KDGE), but I worked the dial on my parent's receiver. I would switch from 100.3 Jamz to K104 to 97.1 The Eagle and so on.
9) Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?
Photography. I love venturing out in the city or stopping at a random rest stop to snap a few shots. The world around us deserves to be admired.
10) You also work at Z100 part time, what is that like?
It is a dream come true! If you are a Top 40 jock, you want to work at Z100. I remember streaming Z100 at my first radio job in Florida and I never thought that I would actually get to work at "New York's hit music station ... Z100!"
Bonus Questions
For someone vacationing in your market, what one thing would you say they "must see"?
Louis' Lunch. They are the home of America's first hamburger. You have to eat there. I have made a promise to myself that even though I am a vegetarian, I will eat at Louis' Lunch. You gotta go.
