BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started as an intern in San Francisco for Clear Channel at KYLD (WiLD 94.9) in 2004 and worked my way up the ranks to weekends and fill-in. I got picked up by sister station KDON in 2006 and held down the Night Show as well as Promotions Director for the cluster until 2011. From 2011-2012 I left KDON and moved back to the Bay Area where I did weekends and fill-in for CBS Radio KMVQ (99.7 NOW!). I made my return to KDON in 2013 and took over as the afternoon host and APD/MD.
Some of people that have helped to mold me and help me become who I am today are Dennis Martinez, Jazzy Jim Archer, Michael Martin, Travis Loughran, Sam Diggedy Segovia, Joe Breezy, Jimmy Steal, Eric 'The Funky 1' Rosado, Strawberry and GHR's Nick G.
1. What got you into radio?
Growing up in the Bay Area, I loved listening to the radio. I grew up listening to WiLD 107.7 which then turned to WiLD 94.9 and listened 24/7. I was THAT kid that would call up the station and ask for the same song over and over again and wait HOURS just to hear it and press record on my tape deck. The Doghouse is what drew me to radio, JV and Elvis were HILARIOUS. Every morning I would listen to them on WiLD and would be drawn in to whatever story was going on that day, I had to go to school at 8:30 so I would press record on my tape deck and let it ride so I wouldn't miss a minute of The Doghouse.
I was just a kid and I remember saying to myself I want to do what they do! They just had fun and it sounded like a dope job! Everything seemed cool about the station, I remember hearing my boss now, Sam Diggedy doing call-ins with Slick D and thought they were the coolest guys ever (remember, I was like 10 years old). Strawberry at night was always someone I listened to and Victor Zaragoza; ladies loved him doing the slow jams. I so wanted to do what they did. As a kid, they were all rockstars in my eyes. I wanted to be a rockstar minus the part of being an ACTUAL rockstar.
2. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
My dad's a cop so initially that was the plan. I also loved baseball and my dream was to play for the San Francisco Giants but I realized I sucked at baseball so there went that. Not to sound too cornball or cliche but radio was always the dream. I wanted to have fun, act a fool and play music.
3. What's your favorite fast food menu item?
I try and stay away from fast food...ain't no one got time for that 'face for radio' old stereotype. LOL! I do love In N Out. I wouldn't consider a burrito fast food but I love me some burritos!
4. Where will we go to find you at 11:00 pm on a Saturday night?
If I'm not in Santa Cruz or Monterey, I'm probably in the Bay. That's the best thing about this market is that we are just a short 45 minute drive to the Bay Area. Don't get me wrong, I'm a family man and love to just relax with the family and enjoy the time that we have from our hectic work schedule.
5. KDON serves three distinctly different cities, Monterey, Salinas and Santa Cruz. What is the most significant about Salinas that sets it apart from Monterey and Santa Cruz?
I love everything about this market and every city in it has its own special thing about it. I'll always love Salinas, the people, the places, the work ethic and the loyalty the people of Salinas have towards KDON. Some of the hardest workers in the country live right here in Salinas, working out in the fields picking the vegetables that you and I both eat on a daily basis, day in day out, they are out there and I have a whole lot of respect for them. Musically, Salinas is one of a kind...they love their pop and hip hop just as much as they love their freestyle and old school. That's what I love about helping program in this market, its only 1 market but kind of like 3 inside 1, if that makes sense
6. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Not a baseball player because I sucked (see above) Not a fashion model because I'm probably too short...but I have extremely good hair...like REALLY good hair. So, probably a hair model. I'm kidding, of course, or maybe not. Follow me on Instagram and find out for yourself: VISAONTHERADIO
7. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love going to the movies, Giants games and I'm a huge videogame nerd. That's like my relaxation, playing PS4 and chillin'. Don't judge.
8. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
You know who's dope? Anthony Bourdain. I love Parts Unknown. If I could be on one show that would be the one! That guy gets to travel, eat hella food, drink all kinds and that's his job. Shoot, let me be a camera man or something so I can eat and try whatever's left over.
9. Hypothetical question...If you were getting married in two months and you could have any group or singer perform at your reception, who would you choose?
An artist or band that doesn't look as good as me and can't sing worth anything. I ain't trying to have the wifey get swept off her feet at our wedding by someone that is way better looking than me and has a symphony coming out of their mouth!
We hired a mariachi for our actual wedding and I've been hearing for years from family members how hot the main dude was. So if you know of any bands that suck and specialize in not having the greatest of looks..HOLLER!
10 If you had to eat one type of meal everyday for a month, what would it be?
Pizza. Pizza never gets old and it' so damn good...when does this month start?!
