KSFM/Sacramento, CA ( Music Director and on-Air)1. What got you into radio?
I was living and doing Improv in Chicago and guy named Amir from my comedy troop came to me and asked, "I have an hour of time I bought from 4-5pm every Thursday at WJKL in Elgin, IL. I have the advertisers already. I just need someone to host this show called "The Disco Helicopter" that broadcast into Chicago and surrounding areas. It takes one hour to get there and another two hours to get back to Chicago through rush hour traffic and by the way it doesn't pay. Do you know anyone?" In a heartbeat I jumped on it. I loved it and later enrolled in The Ole Wooden Radio School.
2. What do you remember about your first impressions of a radio station?
I realized this is where all the really weird humans are in the world. Why the prehistoric equipment and I couldn't believe you got paid to have this much f'ing fun
3. What's the first MD-related thing you do when you come into the KSFM offices in the morning?
I listen to new music.
4. It's the norm for everyone at a station to wear a few hats. You're the MD...what other hats, official or unofficial, do you wear?
I have a lot a passion and drive to learn as much as I can in all aspects of radio. Because of that I am able to fit in wherever I am needed.
5. What do you like to do to relax away from work?
That's the beauty of Cali -ROAD TRIPS! However the way gas is... you probably find me in the club dancing in the cage.
6. A freak gravitational shift has added three hours to everyday. What would you do with those extra three hours?
Sleep
7. Your boss, KSFM OM/PD BYRON KENNEDY has added programming responsibilities at sister station KZON/Phoenix on an interim basis. How has that affected your work load at the station?
In a very minor way. Byron is a Jedi Master. When he is in Phoenix people here know their jobs and BK's expectations. Not to brag but the vibe at KSFM is what other stations really strive for. We all mesh very well together and have each others back, no matter what. Were a team and most importantly a close FAMILY! We don't trip if Byron asks us to do something extra.
8. Who do you consider your mentor(s)?
Real talk...Bryon Kennedy. It's not just because he's my boss but he is "THE MAN" in all aspects. Also Randy Fox-The Elite. He's the best in the nation when it comes to Imaging. Tony Tecate- Powerful- I learned tons from Tone. He really showed me the way to radio. I can't forget Ken Sutherland, Jay Rose, and last but not least, GOD Jerry Clifton. He's a genius.
9. What would you say is the highlight of your work day at KSFM?
Finding that Nugget!
10. What is your favorite song that you're not playing at KSFM?
One Block Radius-You Got Me
Bonus Questions
If you were to leave Radio and music today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
Alicia Keys' International Bath Robe Holder/Manager .
If you were getting married next weekend and you could have any artist, or group, perform a special song for the first dance at your wedding reception, who would you chose?
I would say Alicia Keys but it would be awkward to ask my wife to sing at her own wedding, so probably G-Love-and Special Sauce-Baby Got Sauce.
