BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
2001: Promotions/Board-op/Part-time jock/Research Department at KXJM (JAMMIN 95.5 in PORTLAND.
2002: Nights/Afternoons/Promotions Director at KDON in SALINAS/SANTA CRUZ/MONTEREY
2004: Mornings/Mid-days at XHTZ (Jammin Z90)/SAN DIEGO
2006: Mid-days/Public Affairs/APD at KKFR (POWER 92.3)/PHOENIX1. What got you interested in Radio?
I knew I wanted to be in the music industry, but originally I envisioned myself on the label side. I started working for E-Bro's independent promotions company in PORTLAND, OR called CONSCIOUS VIBES, INC. At the time, he was doing mornings at KXJM and that company was one of his side hustles. We did street promo, promoted different nights around the city, etc. Eventually, I made moves to work at the radio station and got on doing promotions there. The moment I stepped into the studio and saw MARIO DEVOE crack the mic, I was like "Yo, I have to do that!".
2. What's been your biggest disappointment in Radio?
I'm not rich or famous. What part of the game is that?
3. What's the highlight of your radio career to date?
Coming to Phoenix and working for Emmis. I can't say enough about the company and the talent therein. Not only have I been treated well, but the company has created a huge opportunity for me with this new position.
4. You were recently promoted to APD at KKFR. What prompted the move into programming management?
I love being on the air, but I've always felt like I need to be in a constant state of progression. I don't want to sit still and complacent as the years pass me by when I could be using that time making moves to secure my future in radio by diversifying my skill set. Whoa! Where the hell did "diversifying my skill set" come from? I think I read that I should do that in a fortune cookie once. Those guys over there at PANDA EXPRESS are way smart.
5. Where do you see yourself in five years?
I will be a PD in a Top 25 market and married to PHARRELL from the NEPTUNES. He totally wanted me until his security detail found me digging through his trash can looking for clues about his eating habits.
6. Who do you consider to be your mentor(s)?
I have a laundry list as follows: E-BRO, MARIO DEVOE, ALEXA "THE GIRL NEXT DOOR" SMITH, MARK ADAMS, CAREEZY, DENNIS MARTINEZ, SAM DIGGEDY, FIRST LADY EL OF THE MURDA MAMIS and BRUCE ST. JAMES.
7. As the APD, what do you see as the most important role you play in assisting your PD, BRUCE ST. JAMES?
I feel I need to have my finger on the pulse of the staff and the streets. Knowing what their needs are is paramount to our success as a radio station. And I need to move any and all breakable objects out of BRUCE's reach. My PD tends to wave his hands around a lot when he talks. Many a ceramic figurine has met their demise due to the wrath of the BRUCE-STER. My goal for 2006 is to "Save the Ceramics".
8. In the brief time you've been the APD, what has surprised you about the position?
I have like way more hoes and stuff now.
9. In your career, have you seen a significant difference in how men and women in the industry are treated or viewed?
I think women have their own set of issues to deal with in this business. A lot of times we have to fight harder for respect and to be taken seriously. If we have an issue or a problem, we're automatically "PMS-ing", therefore there is minimal validity to our gripe. I've seen some women get so consumed by the struggle, that they morph into evil people who overcompensate just to prove they can hang with the men. I'm trying to avoid that. Personally, I feel that being a woman in the industry is a huge plus. Women are able to deal with others on a more human level in my opinion, and since this business is about people, that is a positive thing.
10. What's your dream market?
I'd love to work in LA or the Bay Area. California is expensive for a reason...it's dope! Eventually, I'd love to go back to Portland and work at home as well.
Bonus Questions
A freak gravitational shift has added three hours to everyday. What would you do with those extra three hours?
I'd dig through PHARRELL's trash some more. Maybe show up on his doorstep with one of the mobile shrines I made for us. Oh, and I'd totally finish the life-size PHARRELL statue I am currently molding in my living room out of vegetable shortening.
