BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started in Detroit, my hometown, at Radio One 105.9 JAMZ. I later moved to Cleveland where I spend 13 years on WENZ Z107.9 and WZAK 93.1. I've also spent time in Columbia, SC at WWDM, The Big DM and Milwaukee WJMR, JAMMIN 98.3. Now you can catch me back in Columbia, SC at WLXC, KISS 103.1.
1) Who were some of your influences during your career?
Nate Bell, Charles 'Spudd' Spence, Colby 'Colb' Tyner, KJ Holiday, Bill Black and Karen Vaughn
2) Was a radio career by choice or a happy accident?
Totally by accident. I mean, I always loved radio, but I had no idea that doing something I'd loved since I was a kid could turn into a career. I thought, you really mean I can get paid for this?
3) How does a typical day go for you?
Checking e-mails, voicemail, meetings, scheduling music, and doing my afternoon air shift.
4) What's the best advice you've ever been given?
Don't think or judge, just listen. And my mom used to tell me, "They got theirs, now you get yours."
5) If budget was no object, what would you like to do with your station?
Get an unlimited supply of T-shirts and have access to any artist I wanted for interviews and performances.
6) What's your advice to others on dealing with adversity?
Have a positive mindset, don't make excuses, have faith, and don't take no for an answer.
7) What inspires you?
Music, it has always been my go-to; each tune is connected to memory in my life.
8) How about sharing some standout radio memories?
My first real radio gig in another market and I announced the wrong call letters. I was in Cleveland and I said the call letters for the Detroit station I had just left.
9) What surprises you about music today?
Expecting the unexpected. How artists are releasing their music today, it's more random compared to back in the day. It's almost like they're breaking tradition and releasing albums without warning and it's exciting, I love it.
10) How do you see radio evolving?
People will still depend on their local radio; however, it may be a challenge for independent mom-and-pop stations as they may face the challenge of being phased out and owned by larger companies.
Bonus Questions
Could you share two facts about you that would surprise people?
I would love to program an Urban Mainstream, or a Top 40 -- and I hate cheese except on pizza.
