1. How did you become interested in radio?
Grew up on it! I listened to the late-great Bob Collins, Spike O'Dell, Collins, and Kennedy, Red Hot Brian Scott, and had the bug ever since.
2. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
Kick 104, All-Hit 98.9, and WGN-A.
3. What led you to KCCQ?
Divine intervention! Actually I had interviewed for another job with the cluster here, and this position opened up, and they felt I was a better fit here, and within 5 minutes of talking to Joel McCrea, I realized that I had to work for him. It's been great!
4. What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I am addicted to watches! I can't get enough of them. I am always on the hunt for another watch, but I am known among my friends as the one who is always late. Maybe I should utilize my watches more.
5. What part of your job do you like best? Least?
Working with the great people in this company, and having access to great tools to make my job more efficient.
Least? Being apart from my wife, she is still hunting for work up here, but that is only a temporary thing. Other than that, I can't think of anything, love it here.
6. What would an outsider find most surprising about the Des Moines radio market?
The people in this market are very vocal about the music they like, if they don't like something, they will tell you, and they are really into their local music acts.
7. How would you describe the music and imaging on KCCQ?
I would say musically we are very aggressive, and we don't shy away from breaking a great artist, while giving you a great variety of music. As far as imaging goes, I would say we are sarcastic, thanks to Malcolm Ryker. He makes us sound huge!
8. What makes KCCQ unique?
We are very broad, and cover a lot of parts of the alternative format from the rock to the songwriter-type music, to the hipster stuff, plus we play local artists on this station. You don't find that everywhere.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
seeing my wife, I wouldn't be here without her support.
10. What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
I would probably be teaching kids history, but the thought of me shaping young minds frightened too many people.
Bonus Questions
What are your hobbies?
I am a music junkie. I love sitting down with a CD and getting to know it from the cover, to the music, to the smallest details that went into its production. To me, there is no better way to experience music, then to put together the pieces that make it.
