1. How did you become interested in radio?
When I was a kid I wanted to be a "weather girl." But when I seriously started thinking about college, broadcasting/communications seemed like a better option (my lack of math skills). I was a big music head in high school, so I started working with WOBN, the college radio station, and fell in love with programming. Funny now how one of my segments on the CD101 Morning Show is weather, right?
2. What part of your job do you like best? Least?
Best: New music and the people I work with.
Least: I wake up at 4:30a every day. I love local rock shows, so it's difficult to get out some nights.
3. What makes CD101 unique?
CD101 is incredible. I mean, take a look at our playlist -- The Clash next to The Rapture next to Wilco. We have this great show called, "The Big Room Brunch" that features live performances from bands that were recorded in our Big Room. We play great covers and rare versions of songs. Also, I was one of the lucky kids that grew up on CD101, so I remember and appreciate how community aware we've been through out the years.
4. What would an outsider find most surprising about Columbus?
How obsessed the community is with the Ohio State Buckeyes. So much Scarlet and Grey. But we have a great music scene that gets overlooked nationally all too often. Excellent venues, and people dedicated to organizing local rock and hip hop nights.
5. Explain the recently established Music Team at CD101?
Well, when Jack DeVoss (previous MD) left, Andyman wanted to try something a little different. Instread of hiring a single MD, he pulled together a team of people with different music interests, but who share a passion for CD101 and our playlist. We each have individual MD duties and contacts, and organize our music meetings. The Music Team is myself, Tom Butler and Rudy Gerdeman, who also host "The Independent Playground" on CD101, and Mike Folker.
6. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Coffee! I wake up at 4:30a.
7. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Be unique but relate to your community. That's something that has made CD101 successful -- we have the best audience in the world.
8. Besides CD101, what is your favorite radio station and why?
I also grew up on WOXY in Cincinnati before they became an online station. I love their playlist. I have a friend who works with WFNX, also a very nice station.
9. Biggest career highlight?
Being part of the team has been a great experience, and I look forward to future projects. Oh, and I met Elvis Costello with CD101 once. Totally ruled.
10. What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
Probably enviromental studies.
