1. How did you become interested in radio?
When I was 8 I really started to come into my own with music. My mother always jammed the best music when I was a kid -- Earth, Wind, and Fire, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Fleetwood Mac, and The Beatles. I always admired the grooves in the music not to mention the passion that was being released through the sound of those artists.
2. What part of your job do you like best? Least?
Being able to interact with celebrities on a one-on-one level only to find that they're just like you and me, only they have cooler jobs.
Least? Last minute production being handed to us RIGHT as we're about to go on-air.
3. What makes KRZQ unique?
We know how to separate a fine line from being too active and too alternative.
4. What would an outsider find most surprising about the Reno market?
The amazing amount of condos that are being built downtown. There's so much development going on you would think that people are looking to move here or something.
5. What are you most passionate about?
This is a tough one. I'd have to say success. I'm very passionate about the relationships I'm in -- whether it's a co-worker relationship, personal life, or my love for the New York Yankees. There's a certain amount of success that comes with everything. You have to know how to achieve your goal without losing your focus.
6. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Iced Venti 5 shot, non-fat, no whip, white mocha, please.
7. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
I've never backed down from telling the truth. You can ask our VP of Programming, Jeff Sanders. He and I shared a few words in November 2005 about programming which eventually led to my departure only to be brought back less than 6 months later because of me standing by my convictions. I've been told by a NUMBER of people, from programmers to promotion peeps at labels, that I need to watch my tongue. Thing is, when I believe in something/someone, I'm going to stand by my words until the ship has either sank or sailed to glory's end.
8. Besides KRZQ, what is your favorite radio station and why?
KBPI/Denver and Live 105/San Francisco come in tied for the lead. The mix that 'BPI offers without compromising its integrity is f*cking awesome. They play smash songs from bands that are proven - KoRn, Disturbed, deftones, Metallica, etc. Live 105 gets my love because of the imagery they have. Sure their playlist is solid but, to me, it's what is in-between the songs and going into spot breaks that keeps things fresh. They've NEVER let me down.
9. Biggest career highlight?
Singing with Pantera on stage in '92.
10. What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
Male Porn Star.
Bonus Questions
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are road trips to see bands, spending time with my Godson, movies, reading as much as I can, taking in a Yankees game or 162, Newcastle Ale taste tests, and looking for the next band that's going to make people freak out.
