NAME:Kenny WallTITLE:PDSTATIONS:KMYZMARKET:Tulsa, OK (#65)COMPANY:Shamrock CommunicationsBORN:Conway, ARRAISED:Plumerville, AR
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Radio Vagabond. Everywhere from Alexandria, LA to Sydney, Australia.
LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:
Worked for Powergold Music Scheduling Software 1995-1998.
1. What led to KMYZ successful Winter '07 Book?
The fruits of our labor six months ago. Thankfully, I'm at a station that gives me the tools to win. We did a research project and music test. Dave Beasing from Jacobs Media helped sort the music and set the agenda, we implemented to the letter, and it worked.
2. What were the highlights for the station?
The Edge had the highest Adults 18-34 numbers in over 5 years.
3. How has the station changed since you took over as PD last April?
We're more familiar. We did the music test and found out what the hits were and stuck to them. A nice by-product of that is we successfully aged the station. Our teen composition was so high; we couldn't get in on any beer ad buys. Now, we're able to advertise beer stuff pretty much all day. That makes the sales department smile!
4. How would you describe the radio landscape in your market?
Rock is the most crowded. You've got four stations playing some form of Classic Rock and then us. Other than that, there is about two of every other major format.
5. What would an outsider find most surprising about the Tulsa market?
The amount of shows we have. Cain's Ballroom is one of the best "rooms" to play if you're a band. We are involved in about 8-10 shows per month. We don't have a big arena, so most of the big shows go to Oklahoma City. But, that will change next year as we open a big-ass arena. That should bring us even more shows.
6. What makes KMYZ unique?
We are able to play a wide-variety of alternative, but still be familiar and inclusive.
7. Could you rundown KMYZ on-air line-up with a little insight of each jock?
First off, each one of the jocks are GOOD people. You really don't have to worry about anyone doing anything that stupid.
AM Drive: Greg Kocsak and Chuck Stikl. They've been at the station for about 12 years in some fashion. They are PASSIONATE about music and love to talk about it.
Midday: Demko. He was in PM drive and then moved to middays (which suits his style more). He too is an audiophile. He's able to show that off in his "download of the day" feature. He grabs something that is either new, remixed, live, or rare and spins it at 2pm everyday.
PM Drive: Some butthole named Kenny. He sucks.
Nights: Amber. She's our fulltime rock chick. She's young, hot, and tattooed. Girls want to be like her and men want to be with her. She has a nice life!
As far as weekenders, we are lucky to have a bevy of talent. Channing just came from Dallas where she was doing middays at The Bone (She's originally from here). Tracy Bailey does our weekday traffic and a weekend shift. She has one of the best natural voices ever. RC is energetic ladies man. And we just added Kim Anthony. She is really fun to listen to. Sean is a remote tech that is starting to do airwork for us. Matt Lipp handles our local show and does a great job even though he hasn't been in radio that long.
8. Of all the skills you have gained through the years, is there an area you'd like to improve?
Being able to critique a talent without feeling like crap afterward.
9. What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Execute the basics well, and chances are you're already ahead of the other guys.
10. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
KSSN/Little Rock. The best Country station EVER. I was lucky enough to work with those guys later on. Back when they first signed on, they ran the Drake-Chenault reels. I listened so much; I learned the order of the songs and was able to predict what they would play!
Bonus Questions
What would surprise people most about you?
