1. What do you like best about programming WHFS?
The people. There are some really strong personalities here at the station that have been on the air a long time. I've got to throw props to my boy Tim Virgin. He is one of the best jocks in the country. Also have to say that you will be hearing a lot more from my midday show Ed Norris. Mark my words.
2. How is your day structured with 'HFS programming being split between Talk and music?
I have a syndicated AM show (The Junkies) and a local midday show (Ed Norris). I am heavily involved with Ed's show and its development. Ed was the Baltimore Police Commissioner and was an Officer in NYPD before coming to radio. Teaching a cop how to do radio has been a whole lotta fun. Nights and weekends, we go into HFS mode and are structured like any music station.
3. What has been your biggest challenge since joining 'HFS?
Getting industry people and listeners to understand the talk/music relationship and how it works.
4. What makes the station successful?
The heritage of the station mixed with the personalities. The music is getting better, which helps a great deal.
5. What makes 'HFS a unique Alternative station?
Obviously the talk portion of the day is unique, but we do it in a style that is completely different than a traditional talk station or even hot-talk station. Think of it like a television broadcast day with block programming...the best part is, we still get to play cool, new music with the classics that made the station famous.
6. How big is the station's impact online?
Huge, and growing everyday. Great database and now with streaming, the stations gets upwards of 20,000 page views a day.
7. What would surprise people most about the station today?
That we still can break a band and impact sales.
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Vodka, definitely vodka
9. Besides WHFS, what is your favorite radio station and why?
I've always been a big fan of 99x in Atlanta and Live 105 in San Francisco. I think they both do a great job of promoting themselves without sounding too invasive.
10. What can we expect from the HFStival this year?
A very diverse lineup and Murphy being hammered by noon.
