NAME:ShadowTITLE:MDSTATION:KQRA - Q102MARKET:Springfield, MO (#145)COMPANY:Midwest Family BroadcastingBORN:December 17thRAISED:Madison, WI
LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:
Hey, Bartender - Hit me with another ...
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I'm lucky to say that I've only been to two places in my whole six years in radio. 2000-2002 - WJJO/Madison, WI (hi guys!) and then in 02' I took a gig within the company and ended up at Q102 in Springfield, MO - it's cool, I've been here since the start-up.
FIRST RECORD EVER PURCHASED:
How about the first record that made a difference in my life? Scenario: I'm 12, skipping school and sitting at Burger King. Wow, do I love that band New Kids On The Block - how dreamy. Then my friend comes over and without even giving me a choice puts a pair of headphones on me, on those headphones is Metallica "The Frayed Ends Of Sanity " and I fall in love. I tear down all my NKOTB posters and buy "And Justice Of All..." I have a diverse taste in music, but I always think of what I could be favoring today, musically, had I not listened to that album.
FIRST CONCERT:
Metallica in October of 91' - it was also the first time I headbanged and felt what it was like to lose my hearing...
FAVORITE BAND OF ALL-TIME:
Metallica (older) with Static X coming in at a very close second.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I've always been interested in listening to radio and calling into stations trying to get my songs played. I didn't think I'd do it for a living (and I use the term loosely). Hell, I couldn't even stand up in front of a class of 30 people without peeing a little. I was on my way to work one morning and I heard a commercial for a Broadcasting School. I enrolled the next day and thanks to one of my teachers, Glen Gardener (who is the former PD of JJO), the rest is history.
2. What part of your job do you like best? Least?
Best: The people! Kristen, Brian (sometimes), Jake, Flik, Eman, Lindsay, and Oedipus -it's pretty cool to work with people who you consider your best friends.
Least: DUBS - need I say more.
3. What is your biggest challenge at the station?
I think the most challenging part is coming up with promotions that aren't your average "listen at 10a, 2p, and 5p and be caller number" bla, bla, bla! We sit as a group and try to come up with promotions that are unique (hey, we've even had SOME of those promotions stolen by big market stations). We don't want our listeners to have to jump through hoops, but we don't want to be predictable either. Some work, some don't.
4. What makes Q102 unique?
I think the personalities make Q102 unique -- each of us is so different. No egos, our listeners think of us as their buds. We're out on the streets day in and day out. Hell, even if we're not on the streets, we are . Most of us will kindly go to the bar if you ask us.
5. How has the station changed over the past year?
Why change a good thing? Our morning show (Lex & Terry) is locked in, the music is tight and none of us have gotten fired. I think we're on the right track.
6. What would surprise people most about you?
I'm not naturally funny.
7. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _______?
A prank from Kristen, a call from John Dimaio, teasing Brian Z., calling Jake an a**hole or Paul stealing a CD from me.
8. Besides Q, what is your favorite radio station and why?
WJJO! They we're the first station I was passionate about before I got into radio and then I got to work with them! Killer music, promotions, and talent! We're their baby sister so every now and then we take their hand me downs. KRZR is second -- Koyote makes me giggle.
9. Biggest career highlight?
It's gonna sound petty BUT getting up on stage during Q102's Rock B4 Xmas with Static X and doing a shot with Wayne Static!
10. What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
No clue. How much are women getting for selling their bodies now-a-days?
Bonus Questions
What are your hobbies?
Cooking (and I'm good at it), drinking, checking myspace to see if I have any new friends, umm a little more drinkin' -- yeah, I'm good.
